Lack of females in Aliens: Colonial Marines prompts gamer outrage, online petition. And quite rightly so

Surely an Aliens game should have male *and* female marines?

Ugh, this complaint in video games has become so over done that I wouldn't care if a video game never had a female character in it ever again. It is annoying. Gears got this complaint, and what happened, they made female characters, who are smaller and harder to actually shoot than the big, bulky counterparts of the opposite sex. Not saying this would be the case in every game, but it's a perfect example of where it didn't quite work out. Anyways, lets actually let the game be released before we start tearing into it. I mean, at one time this game was close to not existing at all. Is the lack of female multiplayer skins really a big deal? Hardly.

If video games are to become more open to the opposite sex-and yes, the opposite sex DOES play video games-then developers need to make sure they don't feel "Alien"ated (ba-dum-tiss) I know that to some people the access to a female character in Colonial Marine's multiplayer is no big deal, but considering that the Alien franchise pioneered the idea of "badass females that aren't just eye candy" it actually makes sense that they are included. Unlike Gears, where the inclusion of female characters was unnecessary...although I still think the women had far more realistic proportions compared to the men.

hilarious how "badass females that aren't just eye candy" evolved into "badass females can't be eye candy" Tho I don't disagree with anything else you pointed out. It's a legitimate concern.

A lack of women in any Aliens related property is like making an adaptation of Dragon Ball Z where everyone is a sharply dressed puny bald headed mute who do all of their fighting with pistols and sensible strategies. It is so far outside of what it means to be appropriate that it doesn't even qualify as wrong.

Well that's unfortunate. Seems really stupid not to allow females in the MultiPlayer. Seems like a petition worth signing. I get tired of all these games that do not include a female alternative.

It's certainly not financially stupid. Cost a lot of time, effort and money to "just add female characters".

In terms of how many thousands of "person-hours" were put into making this game, no... it would not have cost a lot of time, effort, and money to make one or two new character models, which is something people clearly want. Women have consistently been playable characters in online shooters for 20 years.

A couple character models? Do you have any idea what kind of work goes into adding playable female characters? Concept artists, character artists, animators, mocap actors, voice actors, coders, UI artists, writers, scripters and QA are all involved in making and testing playable MP characters. Which also requires tools the studio might not have direct access to, like a mocap studio or recording studio. But you know, you're working overtime already, so what's a few more hours? If you're going to try and call me on my shit try and have something a bit better than "some other games did it".

From the team that brought you Duke Nukem Forever...

And Borderlands. And soon to be Borderlands two. Although I'm not positive that there was any BLATANT sexism in Borderlands.

As long as they dont put in a Vasquez alike... Hated that character sooooo much!

Its definitely odd that the developers would forget to add female multiplayer characters to a game based on movies famed for having a strong female lead. Hmmm...
