Guardian Heroes XBLA remake finally has a trailer

I want to start this news piece with an apology. About two weeks ago a remake was announced for one of the best games Sega ever published, and in the hectic pace of the workday, it didn’t get covered. That changes now! Guardian Heroes is finally getting a much deserved rerelease. It’s going to be an XBLA-exclusive and is planned for some time in 2011 (Summer of Arcade perhaps?). Now that there’s some real footage of the game, at long last I can officially share with you the good news of this cult title’s return.

Guardian Heroes originally came out on Saturn in 1996 and was developed by Treasure, a company known for amazing, if niche games. The fantasy-themed brawler had RPG elements back when that was a new idea, plus a shockingly deep story with multiple, and very different endings. It was all supported by terrific, anime-inspired character designs and combat mechanics so fine-tuned it supported its awesome multiplayer brawls in a separate mode where you could play as basically any enemy or hero from the game. If you enjoyed Castle Crashers, Guardian Heroes is basically the older brother that it learned all its tricks from.

And it looks like Sega isn’t dicking around with this rerelease. According to Sega of Japan, not only will it have online co-op, a must for the campaign, that versus mode mentioned above will support up to 12 players online. Players will also have a choice between the classic Saturn visuals and enhanced graphics made for the remake. Here’s a few of comparison screens from Sega:

Again, according to Sega of Japan Guardian Heroes is going to be 800 points, a more than fair price, while its release date is either Summer/Fall 2011 release depending on what branch of Sega you’re talking to. Hopefully after E3 there will have a real date and maybe even some hands-on time with it.

Guardian Heroes is my all time favourite game and I only have a PS3(money doesn't grow on trees around here). If this doesn't come to PSN I'm never buying another Sega product ever again. And I've remained loyal my entire life.

At least it's not another movie game. *Coolface*

What was the black knight's name? If they unlock him in story mode that would be the sweetest thing since we learned how to use Shiva in Streets Of Rage. Glorious.

Lol. Was playing Radiant Silvergun with my eager to learn gaming kids at the weekend after digging out my old Saturn at my mums(their nans, natch)and couldn't find my copy of this and now the problem is solved-though as I still have it boxed and in great nick it might be worth something. I know copies of RS are going for about £100 last time I looked. I'm actually of the opinion that the old graphics just FEEL better on this, though, but I guess the proof would be seeing it in action as screenies and PC vidis can give shitty impressions. Good that new gamers will be exposed to it anyway. Just have to find mine in case it's worth a bundle!!

This is the best news I've heard in a long time. The game is an absolute classic and being able to play it again without having to bust out my old Saturn is awesome. If you haven't played it you're in for such a treat. Justin Towell, a nation turns it's lonely eyes to you... Please review this.

Damn, that is rather annoying. Only a few short months ago I won an auction for a copy on the Saturn in mint condition which cost around £100. :-( Oh well, at least a whole new generation can experience another masterpiece from Treasure.

I been spending so much time playing games I bought off xbla (psn as well...till it went down) my retail games are backing up. I got Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, and LA Noire on standby. Needless to say I'm as excited as anyone for Guardian Heroes. I'm just happy it's going to be a little while before it releases...I got gamez to play. The quality of arcade lately has been amazing. You can own a console now and never buy a so-called triple A game and still have excellent gaming experiences. And do so cheaply.

This is the first time i heard of this game (bracing for insults...). However i have played Castle Crashers, and wouldn't hesitate to buy the game that gave it all it's tricks. And judging from the video it looks like this would be a day one purchace for me. One problem tho'...NO PSN RELEASE!!! hopefully that's fixed soon. As for the appology, no need. Just give us two free news stories out of a list of five and were square! :-)

With this and Radiant Silvergun.....life now has new meaning. This is one of the best games ever. I cannot wait to get this. Will get it on day one. Treasure rules. If they do release this on psn, I will but it there too. Still have my saturn version somewhere. Awesome awesome awesome!

I enjoyed it on Saturn, back when everything Treasure put out was worth picking up. I might get it on PS3, too bad it doesn't seem to be coming there.

Seriously, this has got to come to PSN. I bought a Saturn years ago (long after it's decline) solely for this game, would be great to play without hooking the old system up.

    Day one! :D
  • reson8er - May 18, 2011 6:38 p.m.

I still have the old game for my Saturn, would love to see the revamp come to PS3.
