Grand Theft Auto trilogy set for a re-release on Mac. PS3 and 360 too, please Rockstar?

No word of a console release, but you know what the eternal optimist in us is thinking

Words: on September 10, 2010

Remember a little series of games known as the Grand Theft Auto trilogy? That rather beautiful set of discs released last generation for the Xbox, PS2 and PC? Remember how it provided us with the delights of GTAs III, Vice City and San Andreas? Well now it's getting a re-release. On Mac. Cue jubilant air-punches of delayed vindication for Apple fans, but sad faces for 360 and PS3 owners.

As far as we know so far, anyway...

Revealed this morning on Rockstar's Facebook page, the Mac versions of the first three 3D GTA games are currently pencilled in for "most likely later this year". Word is a little vague over whether the games will be coming separately or via the previously released box-set, but after this long our guess would be the latter, with a Steam release also possible given that Valve's distribution service is now available to all lovers of minimalist white hardware design.

So, the big question now is, is this announcement down to Rockstar simply embracing the Mac's current gaming boost, or is it part of a wider re-release? Sadly, we don't yet know. There has been no word at all of a similar treatment for 360 or PS3 (though San Andreas is already on the 360 via the Xbox Originals download service, and of course, those lucky enough to own both an old 60Gb PS3-fat and the original PS2 discs can still run those), and so far we haven't been able to get any confirmation one way or the other from Rockstar. We will of course let you know should we hear anything.

But what do you reckon? Would you lap up a re-release of the original three games on HD console if it appeared? Or are you more than happy with Rockstar's more current line-up?

If they wouldn't update the graphics/gameplay engine on such a proposed compilation re-release, one might as well go with the old Xbox/Playstation disc releases of these titles. The original PS3 and the Xbox360 do have limited backward compatability, after all.
I only know that GTA 3 and Vice City work becauase I booted them up on principle alone.
I'd never actually play them for long on a system with the Saint's Row games, Grand Theft Auto 4 or even Xbox originals downloadable GTA San Andreas or even the Simpson's Hit and Run on it.

Of course,if they re-release Vice City or San Andreas again with updated gameplay mechanics and visuals,GTA 4 might not look so hot in comparisson. Ah,so what? They already got their money on it,now they can make oodles more on a rehash!

I doubt it is part of a larger re-release, though if it is, then mandatory list of improvements: HD (duh), bring the controls up to at LEAST the standard of GTA4 DLC, and also rework the way mission checkpoints and restarts are handled. The first two are necessities (especially #2) to warrant a purchase from me, the third would be very nice and pretty much needs to be a necessity for future major GTA titles, but for a re-release I can live without it.

I'd buy the re-releashes in an instant. Vice City was really stylish and San Andreas is just flat out fun to play. I could also see myself going back to 3, if only for it's excellent story. Might I suggest achievements for the 360 version?

I've haven't bought a game over $20 for at least over two years now, but that would change for the PS2 GTA trilogy on the 360 with Achievements. Throw it on the PS3 as well. I'd hate to think that some people wouldn't get to replay those classic games.

I'd lap up San Andreas and Vice City in a heartbeat.

    Not so much 3.

3 didn't have a good soundtrack (outside of Chatterbox!), so the "drive around an listen to the radio" factor isn't as fun.

I want vice city with a new engine. Same story and voices but updated graphics please. Vice city was the greatest GTA ever made and if you don't think so then you must not have been a child of the 80's therefore you are wrong.

They could do with patching the old games for pc while they're at it, Vice City runs on Windows 7 but it doesn't like it.

If they release it for the PS3 (and that's a big "if" I suppose) I hope they program analog stick control for the camera in Vice City and GTA3!
