First screen of Respawn's game appears... sort of

More than a year ago the turmoil within Call of Duty: Modern Warfare development house Infinity Wardresulted in the controversial firings of studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella, with much of the development team exiting with them. On April 12, 2010 West and Zampella formed Respawn Entertainment with much of the old team and announced they’d partnered with Activision’s rival EA to create a new game. Since then we’ve been waiting for any news on the mysterious title they’re working on. Today Respawn finally created a real homepage for themselves and with it was the first image of the game… though we’d use the term “screenshot” loosely…

This looks to be a pretty simple landscape, no humans seem to be on display, and the coloring suggests a more pastoral look than we conjured for the self-described “sci-fi oriented shooter”. Some may think that Respawn released this still to make millions of readers squint at their screens all day, but we think it’s more likely that the game is based off this famous photo of the Loch Ness Monster.

Does this screen make you enthusiastic for the Respawn’s first endeavor, or do you require assets that you can actually see to get pumped up?

In actuality, the blurry "loch ness monster" is actually an axe being thrown. The player's hands are at the bottom of the screen, making fists. Just to the right of the axe is a vehicle(a small apc) or animal(rhino?) of some kind. To the left is a building, possibly chinese or catholic/romantism era architecture. mountains in background are only for show, they aren't part of playable map. In the distance is a cliff or waterfall (the brightest area of screen, just before ground meets horizon). NOTE: TOTALLY JUST GUESSING HERE

Well to me I see a big factory with smokestacks on the right and a path that leads from the factory to a watchtower on the left of the picture. Also on top of the factory, i believe there's a satellite on it or it could be smoke. This has seriously piqued my interest!

I think it's a game based on a POW camp. Look there's a building in the middle with a lane going to it, with a shit load of fences surrounding it. There's also watchtowers and the mountain would suggest it's on an island. Perhaps a LOST-esque game?

I was gonna make a Loch Ness Monster joke but the article beat me to it. If so, then this is def gonna be GOTY. Imagine, An epic game were you play as a mythical laser shooting loch ness monster, fighting off swarms of bigfeet and purple ducks. According to captcha it shall be called "Roacea (after"

Douchebags, still think they're the best developers around that they can play these games rather than reveal their game outright like other developers have to. Call me a troll but I just don't like Vince Zampella

wow! look at those graphics! look at the detail in the... grass?

I see a warehouse on the shores of a body of water that is beginning to become rotten (thus the greenish tint of the water). The warehouse has smokestacks. I see that that still also has a storm on the horizon, if not already on top of the town.

Can't wait till I get the chance to play this!!!

LOL JK This is probably going to be another straightforward military-but-not-quite-military shooter, the colour scheme of which consists of grey, green and an occasional touch of brown to lighten the mood. Pass me something interesting, wouldya?

This is an actual screenshot from in-game. Respawn is challenging the preconcieved notion of "graphics is everything" with their new, unique visual style.

Looks like a warehouse out in the country.
  • Gameguy94 - June 29, 2011 8:18 p.m.

If you squint you see a blurry ass picture.
  • The_Tingler - June 29, 2011 8:15 p.m.

If you squint and turn your head it kinda looks like a bunny.
  • fatdog12300 - June 29, 2011 8:13 p.m.

If I squint really hard, maybe I can see a hidden piture... It's a duck!
  • QWERTYCommander - June 30, 2011 7:01 p.m.

It looks like it's set in ancient times, because of the grass everywhere and the crumbled buildings.
