Dissidia Duodecim: Final Fantasy – first look at Lightning and Kain

Dissidia Duodecim: Final Fantasy will be playable at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. Not much else is known about the upcoming PSP sequel for Dissidia: Final Fantasy, other than it’s tentative 2011 release date in Japan and the fact that Lightning (from Final Fantasy XIII) and Kain from (Final Fantasy IV) will be playable characters.

But we have found screens of Lightning and Kain in action, giving you a hint of what the game will look like. Check it out and compare the new screens for Duodecim against the original Dissidia below.

Above: The official teaser site has launched. Right now, it just shows the game’s logo with a mysterious number ‘12’ along with some background music

Above: Lightning marvels at her incredible power

Above: Lightning's blade looks pretty unique in this image. We wonder if you'll get to customize Lightning's sword in Dissidia Duodecim

Above: Kain spearing his foe from a distance. Like a coward

Above: The most similar image from Dissidia: Final Fantasy that we could find in our library. It looks like there are a few tweaks to the game's UI. Got any theories on how the gameplay might change in Dissidia Duodecim? Let us know in the comments below!

  • RangerZero - September 14, 2010 9:29 p.m.

All we need now is Vicent, Siefer, Red Mage, Vaan (it would be right to leave out the main character of 12...even though he sux),locke, ffx-2 yuna, seymour, auron, omega, and mont blanc...
  • Cyberninja - September 14, 2010 7:47 p.m.

well there are 12 real games in final fantasy so that could be what the 12 means since at the time of the original, 13 wasn't out yet
  • MediocreDinosaur - September 14, 2010 7:14 p.m.

Lightning's EX Burst text says Zantetsuken, I think. Also, they better keep Kuja in. His voice actor confirmed it on his youtube page, but whether that's credible or not is up to you. In any case, here's hoping to logging in another 300 hours into Duodecim.

i say put at least 5 characters from each game or 4 with alternate costumes, cause that wasthe problem with the first game it was very repetitive and very bland, also if the arenas could be a bigger reference to the games and have maps such as the shinra building that would be pretty cool, also more moves for the characters and focus on ground combat.

So I guess Lightning uses the sword from Odin's Gestalt mode in her EX mode. Looks like she's using an EX Burst too, I wonder if it's just Army of One. And I guess now we know Kain has an HP attack called "Gungnir"
  • Moroz - September 14, 2010 2:51 p.m.

Looks exactly like Dissidia, judging by the screens.
  • DeepIsh - September 14, 2010 1:36 p.m.

I'm not sure, but I guess I mean something like eye size, etc. I really cant put my finger on what the problem is.
  • DeepIsh - September 14, 2010 1:34 p.m.

That Lightning kind of fails to look like the Ps3 version... (I don't mean in graphics, obviously it can't look the same, I mean her face looks disorganized in the first SS)
  • pin316 - September 14, 2010 10:42 a.m.

why oh why won't SE just bute the bullet and make a full game version of this for consoles... I can udnerstand the psp-only first game, as it was a bit of a gamble and they wanted to minimise risk. surely now the time is ripe for a 360/ps3 release now tho...

Funny (and a tad disappointing) how this will come out before Agito. That said, I'm looking forward to this. The Lightning fan girl in me is so excited and happy. Now if they included Vivi and Auron, (Vivi especially), I'll be on cloud nine. Yes, the title sure sounds like the organ. Not gonna bother since I'll refer to it as Dissidia 2.
  • kit07 - September 14, 2010 8:06 a.m.

the first one was my fav PSP ever. i clocked in 80+ hours into it and still had tons to do. my wish for the sequel? double the characters add four from each game (1-13) two bad guys two good guys. don't tweak the fighting much cuz that's what i loved about it. getting a one hit KO with my Zidane always felt good. sigh i love the first one so much I may go out and buy another PSP, (i ended up trading my psp plus all my games, yes i regret it) i want this i want this bad DFF was the reason i bought a psp in the first place. pure fan service and i loved everybit of it
  • DrDevious - September 14, 2010 5:46 a.m.

Cant wait! I logged in over 100 hours in the first! Cloud was my main, but I think Lightning will be a tough contender for that spot in this game
  • sklorbit - September 14, 2010 5:18 a.m.

maybe some kingdom hearts characters? the first one was okay, im hoping this one improves on the faults of the first ands adds a lot more characters. first dissidia was wasted potential in my oppinion...
  • Teh_Ty - September 14, 2010 3:32 a.m.

I'm just waiting to use my old 3 mains. Cloud of Darkness, Golbez and Garland. I just want to see how they'll tweak it.
  • Corsair89 - September 14, 2010 3:17 a.m.

Celes and Auron. That is all I ask Square.
  • 510BrotherPanda - September 14, 2010 3:06 a.m.

Man, every time I see that weird word they made up, I think it's DUODENUM. Like the organ...
  • 510BrotherPanda - September 14, 2010 3:04 a.m.

Having never played FF 13, I hoped Sazh would be in it. His afro is nice. And there aren't many ethnicity differences in FF compared with DQ. I'd have liked him, Yang from FF4 and Relm from FF6. Because she's a painter and it wouldn't make sense.
  • EnragedTortoise1 - September 14, 2010 2:29 a.m.

Lightning's sword is actually Odin's sword, but split in two. If you look closely at her Gestalt finisher, she does the exact same thing... but I'm glad they're staying close to the game. Dear God, that was nerdy as hell.
  • ranzatsu - September 14, 2010 2:26 a.m.

Oh my God, so hyped for this. Can't wait! But they could at least fix the crappy voice actors. Like Zidane.
  • ChipTheExecutioner - September 14, 2010 2:03 a.m.

The sword Lighting is using looks rather similar to the one she wielded during Odin's Gestalt mode.
