Crafty hackers mine MvC3 disc for info and come up with Frank West and Doctor Octopus

Some people who are smarter than us have done a little digital digging and come up with some interesting info from the MvC3 disc. In addition to upcoming DLC characters Shuma Gorath and Jill Valentine already being on the disc, hackers Global-Trace and Krissan Thyme have found info that could reveal two new DLC characters, Frank West and Doctor Octopus.

The info, pulled from the disc’s executable file, contains a list of the game’s characters with the notable addition of Dr. Octopus and fan favorite Frank West.  Dead Rising and Alfred Molina fans might not want to get their hopes up too high though, as Global-Trace specified:

"There are references of Frank West and Dr. Octopus found in the boot executable but NONE OF THEIR MODELS, ANIMATIONS, TEXTURES, SOUNDS, ARTWORK EXIST ON THE DISC. NONE. ALL GONE,"

This meshes with reports from last year that mentioned Frank West was playable for much of the game’s development until he was cut at the 11th hour as a result of his moveset requiring excessive work to finish. Whether or not you believe Capcom would put all that effort into an almost complete character only to cut him at the last minute is your call, but given that Frank was fully playable in TvC, it’s hard to believe he’s been totally scrapped. Either way, this is the first we’ve heard of Dr. Octopus being mentioned in any official capacity.

Also of interest is the news that the first round of DLC characters, Jill Valentine and Shuma Gorath, are both already good to go on the disc. Global-Trance does mention that Jill is missing her audio and a few of her moves feel unfinished, but Shuma Gorath is essentially 100% complete. While on-disc DLC rubs some people the wrong way, it’s hard to imagine MvC3 players won’t be getting their money’s worth out of two totally new characters when the DLC goes live in March.

And remember kids, don't try any of this hacking business at home lest you're eager to incur the wrath of the Capcops!

YAY Frank West! YAY Doc Ock! BOO Locked-content DLC! BOO Jill Valentine's stupid RE5 costume! BOO No Phoenix Wright! BOO Exclusive downloadable characters! (Please note the 2:1 ratio of boos-to-yays. Also, that's some awesome work by those hackers.)

What a shock Capcom, dlc is already on the disc. After RE5 and this I think that any further Capcom games that I purchase - I will go through the used market to make sure they don't get a dime from me directly.

Frank was Obvious since he was being worked on before but stopped because of his TvC moves having trouble being balanced into Mvc3's fray. DR. OCTAGONAPUSS! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Leave it to Capcom to put one of my favorite MvC2 characters (Jill) on the disc but not let me use her without paying. Oh well, I'm still buying the game regardless.

I read somewhere that its 400 Xbox points for EACH DLC chgaracter. Which is 1600 for all 4. Its gonna be very hard not to be tempted to have all the characters but Capcom can suck my ****

This would be nice. I liek Frank, and it would be awesome to see him.

Things like these are actually good, stick it to cheap game companies that lock out content that is already on the disc.
  • JackSkellingtonsSkin - February 19, 2011 12:57 a.m.

This is what makes people turn against game devs.
  • Ampatent - February 19, 2011 12:19 a.m.

Still don't like the DLC whoring by Capcom.
  • Stabby_Joe - February 18, 2011 11:42 p.m.

I knew Frank West would come later having already been an original character cut.
  • Darkhawk - February 18, 2011 11:37 p.m.

I've been waiting for Doc Ock ever since I started planning my dream MvC3 lineup back in school years ago.

Looks like he used the PS3 hack so you should probably be more fearful of Sony Corps than whatever Capcom can do.
