Assassin's Creed film lead actor announced

Today Variety announced that they've got the official word on who will be starring in the upcoming film based on Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series.

The leading role will be going to Michael Fassbender who also played Magneto in X-Men: First Class as well as a leading role in Prometheus.

Ubisoft has said though that this lead character may not actually be Desmond as most people assumed. "Fassbender will play the lead role, but it's too soon to say exactly which character that will be," a Ubisoft representative told Joystiq.

Interestingly, Fassbender will also be lending his apparently deep pockets to the project as a producer. Ubisoft has so far insisted they retain control over who directs and writes the film.

With a bit of respected Hollywood talent on board, the AC film is gathering a bit of momentum. We're looking forward to seeing who Ubisoft taps to write and direct the project. We're also eagerly awaiting an official announcement that the film will not involve Jake (A.K.A. Chesty Shirtless) Gyllenhaal in any way.

I wasn't expecting that name to be dropped at all. Though I don't know why - Fassbender seems to be in EVERYTHING right now. Still, I like him as an actor. I can probably see him as a slightly more charming Ezio more than any of the other characters. Probably not as Desmond though.

I hope Michael Bay directs it. I feel like the Assassins Creed series could use a few more exploding helicopters crashing into nuclear power plants in the middle of world war 5.

I rather liked Fassbender in X-Men: First Class. I don't know much about comics, but what I do know about Magneto's origins were portrayed well, and I really felt like he "got" the character. So, knowing that, it makes me cautiously optimistic for the AC film. Incidentally, I didn't know there was an AC film in the works (not a confirmed one anyway) so the fact that the first news I'm hearing is good news is a nice start.

Also in Inglorious Basterds. Another great movie he performed well in. I am more interested in the idea of an AC movie if he agreed to it, but time will tell if it is worth it.

He was also the best thing (by far) about Prometheus.

...I was not expecting taht name to be dropped. Then again, i wasn't even paying attention to this film, and wasn't even aware there's a film in the works. And well... Fasbender strikes me as nothing as any of the assassin that have come out in the games, but if they are not focusing on Desmond and whatnot, it could work. If nothing else because Fassbender has proven to be an amazing actor. Though one has to wonder if having him is enough to elevate this film from the wretched fate most videogame adaptations are doomed to suffer. (Probably not, but one can hope, right?)
