Very few people expected Grow Home to be as great or unique as it is. What initially looked like a standard, cutesy platformer turned out to be a brilliantly compulsive, deep, nuanced, physics-driven playground with player creativity and dynamic world-building at its absolute core. It’s a stunning good, delightfully evocative little game, and now it’s getting a sequel, Grow Up. This is Good News Indeed.
Just announced at Ubisoft’s E3 2016 press conference, Grow Up takes robot protagonist Bud’s campaign for altitude in a whole bunch of new directions. Figuratively, anyway. Literally, it’s still mainly up. Though much higher, as this time you’ll be aiming for the moon.
To get there, Bud has learned a few new tricks. He can now pop a hang-glider to fly great distances over what look to be much bigger, more freeform levels. He can float on bubbles. He can sow Star Seeds – carpet bomb them on fly-bys, in fact, by the looks of it – to grow new platforms as well the first game’s towering stalks, and… well, that’s about all the know at the moment. The presentation was quite brief. But it was enough. Grow Home is brilliant, and more Grow Home can only be a force for the purest good. We should get more information very soon though, as Grow Up is due out in August.
