Minecraft clone accidentally released as mobile app, quickly taken down by developer

It may not have been the real deal, but iOS gamers were given an all-too-brief taste of how the indie PC hit Minecraft would play in mobile form via the short-lived and independently produced clone, Minecrafted.

Created by developer Trevor Wilkin, Minecrafted featured graphics and gameplay identical to developer Mojang Specifications' original, but was, as Wilkin stated in the game's release, "built from the ground up for Apple devices without code or content from the original."

The clone appeared briefly in Apple App store for $0.99 before being yanked by Wilkin himself. He later stated that he was only looking to test Apple's approval process, and that he has no intentions of going live with his game until Mojang Specifications gives him express permission to do so.

Minecraft's creator Markus Persson has since taken to Twitter to speak aboutWilkin's misfire, stating that while no official mobile app is in production on his end, he hopes future attempts at copying Minecraft's design will yield more creative results: "Ideas are meant to be spread. But I wish [developers would] try to make it original rather than a straight clone."

Wilkin is reportedly still waiting for Persson to return his emails.
