Yesterday we reported that Universal had put a pause on Pacific Rim 2 (opens in new tab), with Legendary Pictures mulling over whether or not to go ahead with the sequel at all. However, according to Guillermo del Toro, all is not yet lost, with the director intending to carry on working on the project as planned.
“We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks,” he said in an interview with EW (opens in new tab). “As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it. It moved further. I may do another movie in the middle.”
The sequel had initially been scheduled to begin filming this November, with a view to a release date in August 2017, although that now seems optimistic.
Naturally, if Del Toro had his way, he’d get to make this film alongside his other passion projects currently on the back burner... "I can tell you this, if I was a billionaire, I would definitely do Hellboy 3, Pacific Rim 2 and At The Mountains Of Madness," says the director. "And I would quickly become a millionaire." Joking aside, we’ll be keeping out fingers crossed he gets a crack at at least one of those, sooner rather than later.
