Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the next Call of Duty game, according to multiple reports.
In a recent tweet, known Call of Duty and Battlefield leaker Tom Henderson said that he could "confirm" that Call of Duty 22 is called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. In a follow-up tweet, he clarified his statement, stating that "I've seen artwork that says "Modern Warfare 2," but not that "this does not necessarily confirm the title [...] as names can change during development."
I can confirm that the 2022 title is called "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II"And the art work looks fucking amazing. pic.twitter.com/PWw5CRIpr1October 9, 2021
Back in September, Henderson made similar claims, suggesting that Call of Duty 2022 was "expected to be a sequel to Modern Warfare 2019," but was currently being referred to internally as 'Project Cortez'. That information was corroborated in another report, which also stated that the game's campaign would involve special forces fighting against drug cartels, but Henderson now seems even more confident in this information.
With Modern Warfare developers Infinity Ward expected to be taking the lead on next year's title, the 2019 title selling notably well, and cutscenes in both that game and Call of Duty Warzone setting a group of characters up for a sequel, Modern Warfare 2 seems like a relatively safe bet. As Henderson points out, however, internal plans are always subject to change, and given that we shouldn't expect a reveal of next year's game until summer 2022 at the earliest, it's worth taking this information with a grain of salt.

I'm GamesRadar's Managing Editor for news, shaping the news strategy across the team. I started my journalistic career while getting my degree in English Literature at the University of Warwick, where I also worked as Games Editor on the student newspaper, The Boar. Since then, I've run the news sections at PCGamesN and Kotaku UK, and also regularly contributed to PC Gamer. As you might be able to tell, PC is my platform of choice, so you can regularly find me playing League of Legends or Steam's latest indie hit.
