These Hogwarts Legacy tips and tricks are everything you need to get started fast as a new wizard. You might think you know the books and films well but you've never had to actually be a student at Hogwarts Legacy, and there's an large open world to explore here full of new rules and experiences. As well have having a lot of new things to learn, there are lots of features, abilities and progress all weaved through a branching story that can confuse things. Like, for example, when the one thing you need for a quest is only available once you complete some other objective.

To help make sense of it all and get you spell casting in no time, here are nine top Hogwarts Legacy tips you can make use of early on in the game.

Hogwarts Legacy quick tips

  1. Spam Revelio all the time to reveal things, even through walls
  2. Almost everything is locked behind story progression
  3. Always check gear you pick up to swap in better stuff and boost your stats
  4. Visit vendors regularly to clear out unwanted gear and make some money
  5. You can still transmog with gear you've sold
  6. Eye chests get you quick cash once you have Disillusionment
  7. You can change your look once you reach Hogsmeade
  8. Collect every ingredients you can as it'll all be useful for potion-making later
  9. Missions list rewards so you can see if it's worth it

1. Use Revelio all the time to reveal hidden things and earn XP faster

Revelio is basically wizard vision, highlighting objects, enemies and more in the world when you cast it. It shows danger, loot, interactable stuff and anything you might need or want. It even works through walls. So use it all the time to make sure you don't miss out on anything you could otherwise walk past. It's especially good to reveal the countless Field Guide Pages that can turn up all over the place. Out of all the Hogwarts Legacy spells you'll learn, this is the one you'll be casting constantly.

2. Almost everything is locked behind main mission progress

While you might want to branch off and get some things sooner rather than later, the game generally won't let you do almost anything unless you complete key story beats first. So whether it's getting your Hogwarts Legacy broom, or learning a particular Hogwarts Legacy spells, you'll only be allowed when when you've done specific things first. So many important things are locked behind the story, so don't waste time trying to get things before you're allowed. Check mission rewards to see what you'll get and, if you need or want an ability, just stay on the main story.

3. Check gear constantly to swap in higher level stuff and improve stats as you collect it

You'll be hoovering up better robes and gear almost the entire time you're playing. The improvements aren't huge moment to moment but you'll be getting so much it's easy to forget to actually check. So make a point of looking regularly and making sure you're improving your characters with an extra point here and there as you upgrades boots, gloves and so on. If you see a green arrow next to an item as you pick it up it, it means it has better stats so, as soon as you can, swap things out.

4. Visit vendors regularly to clear out Gear Slots and earn cash

You are going to be getting a lot of gear in Hogwarts Legacy from almost constant drops and rewards. But you only start the game with 20 Gear Slots in total which fills up quickly. So get into the habit of selling off anything you're not wearing to the vendors littered around the map. Eventually you'll find Hogwarts Legacy Merlin Trials which you can complete to get more Hogwarts Legacy gear slots. Even then, you'll still probably want to sell it all off as you go. You can destroy items if you're desperate, but it's always better to turn it into cash.

5. Transmog saves any outfit you find even if you sell it

Don't be afraid to sell off any outfits you find, as transmog will remember it even if you dump it off without ever trying it on - once you've got it, it's a transmog option. You can change the appearance of each item of clothing by hovering over it and pressing square or X. Handy for keeping whatever look you've styled, regardless of what gear you're actually wearing or kept. You can even make items invisible if you don't fancy looking like you're wearing glasses, say, but want their stat boost.

6. Eye chests are a quick way to get fast cash

Hogwarts Legacy eye chests appear early in the game, long before you know what they actually are and what you can do with them. Initially they'll slam shut the second you get near them, but opening them will earn you 500 Galleons. Like everything in the game, being able to access them is tied to the story so you'll have to keep playing main missions until you reach the 'Secrets of the Restricted Section' objective. This unlocks the Disillusionment charm which makes you more or less invisible. Once you have this you can sneak up on the eyeball chests unseen and pop them open to get the cash.

7. You can change your hair, and face at Hogsmeade

Once you've chosen your Hogwarts Legacy witch or wizard you can change your hair color, style, eyebrows, and facial features like scars and freckles at Madam Snelling's Tress Emporium in Hogsmeade. You'll need to play through until you have the freedom of the village but once there you can, for a small fee, switch up your look whenever you like. You can't change your overall face though, so you're stuck with your initial choices there - no Polyjuice Potion for you.

8. Collect every ingredient, it'll all be useful for potion-making

You'll come through countless potion ingredients in the wild. Some ingredients such as Horklump Juice and Jumping Toadstools are essential for brewing helpful concoctions like Wiggenwald Potion and Erdurus Potion. Scavenge everything as you explore, as nearly all of it ends up being useful and there's no max capacity for what you can carry. When you eventually unlock the Hogwarts Legacy Room of Requirement you'll be able to grow and harvest your own resources as well.

9. Missions tell you what rewards you'll get

Generally you'll want, or need, to do all the main missions as the only way to unlock powers and abilities. However, if you want to know whether a task will be worth the effort, check the quests menu to see what rewards you'll earn. These can vary from unique spells to new gear, gold, and more. You can even choose to double-cross the quest-giver sometimes, keeping whatever item they wanted you to get for them as well as your rewards, or extort them for more gold. Just expect them to be cross about it and make comments about your treachery whenever bump into them.

The release of Hogwarts Legacy has been the subject of criticism and debate due to J.K. Rowling's public stance on gender identity, which continues to challenge the inclusivity at the heart of the Harry Potter community. Here is our explainer on the Hogwarts Legacy controversy.
