No pressure Steam Frame: Meta's mixed reality division is still haemorrhaging money, losing $4.6 billion in its second quarter of the year

2026 has been a tough innings for Meta's Reality Labs division. From the word go in January, it's seen lay-offs, studio closures, price hikes on its popular VR headsets, and yet more layoffs. It doesn't seem like things are getting any better yet, as it's just been revealed this segment of the Facebook company lost $4.6 billion in the second quarter of 2026.

The numbers were shown in a Q2 earnings call that showed Reality Labs' continual losses flow even further from the 4.03 billion it lost in Q1. It may surprise you to learn that these numbers are actually par for the course in terms of quarterly losses from Reality Labs since 2023. Its worst-performing quarter ever was Q4 of 2025 when it lost $6.02 billion, so you can see why drastic measures were taken at the start of 2026.

The round of price hikes that was issued to the Quest 3 devices earlier in 2026 seems to have done nothing to help Reality Labs balance the books in a significant way. These headsets have always been the go-to mainstream pick because of their approachable prices, but that isn't so much the case these days.

These losses come despite the company's revenue for Q2 2026 sitting at $431 million, up from $370 million compared to the same time period in 2025.

I'm hardly an economist, but it seems like Reality Labs is pulling in plenty of money; it's just that its spending is massively outweighing it. This could be down to loads of factors. The workforce alone will be pretty large, even after the rounds of layoffs from this year.

Funnily enough, in a recent AMA on his Instagram, Meta's CTO Andrew Boz Bosworth took a question about if Meta was "done" with VR, and said, "We've talked openly about the fact we're building multiple next-generation headsets. We did get ourselves into a more sustainable shape, that's true, but we continue to invest quite a bit there."

  • The Meta Quest 3 and 3S on a desk in front of green lighting The age of accessible Meta Quest prices could be coming to an end as rumors swirl about the Quest 4

If we take his word as bond, the question remains where the losses are coming from, because they're not all that different from before the company's three biggest VR studios were closed and thousands of people lost their jobs.

A lot of the spending could be directed at R&D and the development of new hardware, since a lot of it will take innovation and trial and error. Even after price hikes, it could easily be the case that Meta is selling its wearables at a loss. This seemed to be the tactic while the Metaverse strategy was still in play, as there was an incentive to get mixed-reality devices on the faces of as many people as possible.

Moreover, manufacturing headsets and smart glasses will be costly too, and it's been fairly widely reported in recent times that selling gaming hardware isn't always profitable on its own. That much is clear from Xbox reporting a 29% drop in hardware sales in its Q2 results for the year.

News of Meta's losses comes while Valve's Steam Frame waits in the wings for its launch, and I'm sure this isn't settling the Steam company's nerves about entering the market. It's long been said that the Meta Quest headsets have been sold at a loss, however, which is maybe why people should expect a higher price tag on the Steam Frame.

In a poll I held in a recent article, I asked readers how much the Steam Frame should cost, and I was surprised to see 42% of people suggesting those numbers should be upwards of $899. With Meta's more affordable headsets strategy proving difficult to profit from, maybe those voters are actually onto something if they want to see a sustainable VR ecosystem that's built to last at Valve.

One of my earliest memories is playing SuperMario64 and wondering why the controller I held had three grips, but I only had two hands. Ever since I've been in love with video games and their technology. After graduating from Edinburgh Napier University with a degree in Journalism, I contributed to the Scottish Games Network and completed an Editorial Internship at Expert Reviews. Over the last decade, I’ve been managing my own YouTube channel about my love of games too. These days, I'm one of the resident hardware nerds at GamesRadar+, and I take the lead on our coverage of gaming PCs, VR, controllers, gaming chairs, and content creation gear. Now, I better stop myself here before I get talking about my favourite games like HUNT: Showdown, Dishonored, and Towerfall Ascension.
