Open-world survival game Permafrost will pit you against a frozen apocalypse when it hits early access later this year
Permafrost, an open-world survival crafting game that challenges you to scratch out a living in an eternally frozen world, was just featured in FGS Live From GDC (which followed the Future Games Show Spring Showcase)
After a lunar cataclysm froze the earth, burying civilization beneath a deep layer of ice and snow, few survived. Now, those that did must head to the surface and try to scavenge whatever they can to survive and attempt to forge a new life. To do so, you'll explore a huge open world, hunting for whatever wildlife you can find, and gathering up any resource that might still prove useful.
With those, you'll have to build shelters to protect yourself against the extreme weather events that still ravage the surface. With enough patience, you might even be able to craft something that harks back to the civilization you lost, but if you're caught in a freak storm while out on a hunt, you may have to throw together a modest lean-to shack as quickly as you can in a desperate attempt to stay warm.
The good news is that you won't have to face the cold alone. Permafrost can be played in up to four-player co-op, so you can bring some friends along to explore its stunning world. And even if you play alone, your canine companion will help detect danger, carry resources, and even sniff out valuable loot.
Permafrost doesn't have an exact release date just yet, but the devs' current plan is to launch into early access on Steam later this year. That early access period is planned to last for at least 12 months, during which time the team will be adding more biomes, quests, and other additions based on player feedback. And if you really can't wait, you can apply to be part of the Permafrost playtest and make your mark on the game a little early.
