Monster Hunter Wilds has been trailing its older siblings in sales, but publisher Capcom really wants to close the gap among its children. It just needs to sell about another 20 million of Monster Hunter Wilds to do so. Easy enough, right?
Last we heard, 2018's Monster Hunter World had sold a whopping 30 million copies. That easily makes it the company's best-selling game ever and a commercial juggernaut in any context, but those monstrous figures also make Monster Hunter Wilds look like a baby seikret by comparison. For most of 2025, Monster Hunter Wilds was selling less than older games in the series and eventually reached about 11 million copies sold.
While Monster Hunter Wilds and Monster Hunter World's sales figures weren't updated at the same time, that 20-million-copy gulf between them likely hasn't changed much based on Wilds' lack of momentum. Capcom wants to turn around the game's fortunes, however, and its plan is already in motion.
"Ongoing enhancements to the technical performance of Monster Hunter Wilds have led to sales for the game improving," the publisher says in a recent investor Q&A. "We have also seen a response to the announcement of the upcoming massive expansion, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, and related pricing measures."
Capcom then notes it plans to keep "improving the game's technical performance" in an effort to "drive its total unit sales beyond those of Monster Hunter World over the medium to long term." In other words, Capcom's hoping the upcoming expansion and continued improvements to the game's shoddy performance can convince another 20 million or so people to buy in. Wilds' Nintendo Switch 2 port should help, as well.
In case you've been hiding in a Monster Hunter-less rock for the last year and a half, Wilds' PC version launched with notoriously wonky performance and tons of technical woes that lasted longer than you would expect of a big-budget game from an acclaimed company. Things have thankfully gotten better, though there's clearly still ways to go if Capcom wants to achieve its goals.
