As ever, the next Minecraft update is set to bring a bunch of exciting new features to everyone's favorite sandbox game. After all, Minecraft has come a long way over the years, will huge annual update bringing in new biomes, mobs, building blocks, and more.
While Minecraft updates, now known as drops, are a little smaller and more frequent than they used to be, this just means that we get those same massive content changes spread out over a long period, so there are more updates to get excited about. There are now four a year, and the next Minecraft update, 26.1, marks the first of this year, so let's check it out.
Minecraft 26.1 release date estimate
The next Minecraft update release date is likely to fall on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. I'm basing this on previous drop release dates falling around the same time as Minecraft Live, which is taking place on March 21.
We already knew that 26.1, AKA Tiny Takeover, was scheduled around March, fitting in with the three-month update schedule. For example, in 2025, there were drops in March, June, September, and December. Now that the first Minecraft Live of 2026 has been confirmed for March 21, we have a better idea of the actual Tiny Takeover release date.
The last Minecraft Live event took place on Saturday, September 27, 2025, during which the consequent Minecraft drop, Copper Age, was announced for the following Tuesday, September 30. Following snapshots and pre-releases, we know that 26.1 is nearly ready for launch, so we wouldn't be surprised by the same timeframe this time around.
Minecraft 26.1 features
The next Minecraft drop is 26.1, Tiny Takeover, which may just be the most adorable Minecraft update there has ever been. While it may not technically make any game-changing additions, this update is all about mob models, with baby mobs getting a complete overhaul.
Before Tiny Takeover, baby mobs were pretty much just shrunken versions of the adult texture, and while they were cute (read: smol), they weren't cute cute. That all changes with 26.1, as baby mobs now have their very own textures, making them look more like actual babies. Look at their little faces!
Baby mobs
As I've mentioned above, baby mobs are getting a texture overhaul, making them cuter, squishier, and chubbier than ever before. And if you think I'm just talking about cats and pigs, think again - from Minecraft axolotls and frogs, to piglins and striders, every Minecraft mob is getting the treatment. You'll even see new baby traders running around your Minecraft village.

It's not just their style that's changing, either. Tiny Takeover adds custom mob sounds for baby mobs and some adults as well. Similar to how different wolves now have a variety of sounds, so will pigs, cows, cats, and chickens, turning your farm into an animal orchestra.
Golden Dandelion
The Golden Dandelion is a new item coming along with the 26.1 update, and is related to these baby mob changes. You see, when mobs looks cute, you don't ever want them to grow up. So, you can stop them. Use a Golden Dandelion on any baby mob to stop it from ever growing into an adult.
Crafted from eight golden nuggets and a dandelion, the Golden Dandelion is unlocked once you breed your first mob in new world. Feed it to a mob to keep it young forever, feed another one to your baby friend, and watch it grow into an adult as normal.
Craftable name tags
This one's been a long time coming, but you will be able to craft name tags as of 26.1. Before now, you've had to obtain these surprisingly rare items from chest loot and fishing, but since you're going to need to name all your baby pets from now on, especially those adorable baby hostile mobs that despawn, a crafting recipe is being added with them.
To craft a name tag following the release of 26.1, simply combine paper and any metal nugget.
Trumpet
Finally, a random addition that seemingly has nothing to do with baby mobs - other than perhaps celebrating their arrival. By placing a block of copper beneath a note block, you'll now be able to make a trumpet sound. What's more, depending on the level of oxidation of the block beneath it, the note block trumpet plays a different note!
