Final Fantasy Resonance calls back to the JRPG series' most sweat-inducing challenge with the jump rope minigame from Final Fantasy 9
Have mercy on our thumbs, Square Enix
Final Fantasy Resonance is going heavy on the Final Fantasy fan service – from the iconic series heroes who temporarily join in on battles to the nostalgic pixel art and fate-defying story – but the fan service goes so deep here that the upcoming game even includes a callback to one of the franchise's most infamous challenges of all time, Final Fantasy 9's jump rope minigame.
Final Fantasy Resonance is somewhat of a celebration of the entire series. After all, you can literally summon fan-favorite characters, such as Cloud and Lightning, to slash enemies into tiny little pixel squares. But good fan service celebrates the uglier, less popular parts of the fandom, too. Enter, Final Fantasy 9's jump rope.
Square Enix recently revealed a couple of minigames you'll be able to partake in when the turn-based game launches later this year, including one that has you play hide-and-seek with Moogles and another that tests your timing with a skipping rope. (Thanks, Gematsu!)
Anyone that's played even the first few hours of Final Fantasy 9 might remember a section that puts us in the oversized shoes and pointy hat of Vivi, the black mage, who can choose to simply remain in the early-game area and jump rope with some kids forever. Or until he becomes delirious since the minigame is really tough. Like, my knuckles are aching and my brows are clammy and all I can hear is the sound of Vivi's boots knocking on the ground, echoing up and down my skull, kinda tough.
Better yet, the challenge was tied to a few really powerful cards used in Final Fantasy 9's Tetra Master minigame. Nowadays, completionists and super fans are even more incentivized to reach 1,000 consecutive, successful rope jumps thanks to two achievements – a challenge that one fan twisted into a FromSoftwarian nightmare by going in with a blindfold.
Either way, for better or for worse, you can partake in the jumping of ropes in Final Fantasy Resonance thanks to a group of kids playing in a village. Perhaps Square Enix will take it easier on our thumbs this time around...
Each town supposedly has a different minigame, so the door's open to other fan-favorite/fan-abhorred activities as well. Blitzball? Fort Condor? Just fishing? We'll find out when Final Fantasy Resonance comes to PC and all current consoles on October 22.
