Power Rangers star Dacre Montgomery has revealed that his 2017 Power Rangers movie was supposed to have three sequels – and Lionsgate wanted the franchise to be the studio's next Hunger Games.
"It was a four-picture deal with Lionsgate," he told MovieWeb, adding that the studio planned to do with Power Rangers what it had done with The Hunger Games franchise. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 had released two years earlier in 2015.
"It was gonna be a whole big thing. But what can you do, right? We're talking about money and big business, and it didn't make enough on the investment that the studio had made to continue making more," Montgomery, who went on to play Billy Hargrove in Stranger Things, continued.

Indeed, the movie made an estimated loss of $74 million for Lionsgate. It wasn't exactly a hit with critics, either, and currently holds a lukewarm score of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 179 reviews).
Montgomery played Jason Scott, AKA the Red Ranger in the movie, which followed a group of high school students who unexpectedly gain superpowers and have to protect the world from an ancient threat. The cast also included Naomi Scott, Becky G, RJ Cyler, and Ludi Lin as the other Rangers, alongside Bryan Cranston, Bill Hader, and Elizabeth Banks.
In 2025, a new TV reboot was revealed to be in the works at Disney Plus with Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners set to write, produce, and serve as showrunners. Not much else is known about the upcoming series at this point.
