We're just a few weeks out from the return of former Sith lord Maul (he ditched the "Darth" bit a while back) to our screens in a new animated show.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is a 10-episode series that puts the sinister Zabrak front and center in his own show. Voiced once again by Sam Witwer, who has embodied the character since he returned to the Star Wars galaxy in the Clone Wars animated show, Shadow Lord follows Maul as he seeks to build a new criminal syndicate and takes on a new apprentice.
Don't think, however, that just because Maul is the protagonist, that means he is now a good guy. "In terms of Maul being the villain? This is a bad guy fighting worse guys," the show's executive producer and co-creator Matt Michnovetz told SFX magazine in its latest issue, which features The Boys on the front cover.
"We definitely did not want to make him a hero. He's courageous, and he's got his own code, but what we did was create a bunch of interesting new characters around him, so that his behaviour and actions directly impact them. We may know how Maul's fate turns out years after our story, but we don't know the fates of our new characters."
Maul's ultimate fate, of course – and we're going to get into some spoilers here for Star Wars: Rebels, so look away now if you've not seen that yet – is to die in battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine. Before that, however, he operates various criminal syndicates across the galaxy.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will be streaming on Disney Plus from April 6, with a two-episode premiere. You can find out more about the new show in the latest issue of SFX #403.
