Beloved actor Matthew Lillard is part of the cast of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 as the enigmatic Mr. Charles, a character apparently original to the show. Though we don't know much about who he is, Lillard is offering up some clues about what to expect from his performance.
"He is somebody who bends the ear of very powerful people around the world. So he's not really interested in Gotham politics. He's interested in world politics," Lillard tells EW, referring to New York City by its old nickname that inspired the name of Batman's DC stomping grounds. "So when he is dealing and trifling with someone like Kingpin, he's not that impressed. That's all I can say, you know? There's this Cheshire Cat sort of energy about him."
Daredevil: Born Again season 2 picks up where the previous season left off, with Matt Murdock taking a bullet for Mayor Wilson Fisk, saving him from an assassination attempt at the hands of Bullseye. Now, with Mayor Fisk cracking down on vigilantes in New York, Lillard's Mr. Charles is getting involved in the conflict. Nonetheless, it appears Mr. Charles won't share any scenes with Daredevil, sticking more to Kingpin's side of the game.
"He's a lot of fun," Lillard says. "You sort of can't do too much with him in this world that's really tense and really buttoned-down, and along comes, you know, Matthew Lillard chewing scenery. So for me, it's a lot of fun. I think that he plays well in the world and I'm excited for people to see him."
"They would allow me to improv stuff and bring idiosyncratic beats to it," Lillard continues. "And the more that we worked together, the more they trusted me. The more they trusted me, the more I got to play. I think that's what [showrunner Dario Scardapane] was hoping I would bring to Mr. Charles."
