Daredevil: Born Again season 2 showrunner Dario Scardapane says his Dungeons and Dragons buddy Matthew Lillard was the only choice for the elusive Mr. Charles.
"Matt and I go way back. We worked together on a show called The Bridge. We worked together on a show I did, State Affairs," Scardapane tells GamesRadar+. "We're, we're really, really good friends. And when we were doing season 2, there was an element, a type of character that there were a couple ways that you could do it. You know, it's a classic guy in black being that guy, or you do the Matt Lillard version of that. And, pretty much from as soon as that character was written, I knew that was the guy that should play it. It took a... It didn't take much with Marvel. And once he came in and did his thing, [he] proved to the world."
I'll level with you: it's pretty hard to go into any kind of real detail about Mr. Charles without revealing some kind of crazy spoiler about the new season. What we can tell you, however, is that the promo still of Mr. Charles at dinner with Fisk and Vanessa says everything. Does he seem scared or intimidated by the mighty Kingpin? Nope. He's just chillin'. He's wearing a plaid button-up and slacks to dinner at the home of the most dangerous man in New York City... The last time we saw someone really and truly unafraid of Fisk was Echo, who always saw through him (and we wonder what she's up to these days).
Continues Scardapane: "I'm always really interested in, like, George Clooney did it in Syriana.... scary and evil, who just seems like a total regular guys."
"He was like, 'Look, I just want to give you an opportunity to shine, and I'm going to write you something really exciting,'" Lillard previously told GR+, telling us that he and Scardapane play Dungeons and Dragons with Karen Page actor Deborah Ann Woll. Lillard has also done the con circuit with Woll and Charlie Cox, so joining the cast was no doubt an easy adjustment.
