Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is here, and so are few new faces. The second season of the hit Disney Plus show introduces us to Matthew Lillard's Mr. Charles... who we knew was a villain just by promotional still alone.
After watching the first episode of the new season, you might be a little confused as to just who Mr. Charles is. We can tell you right off the bat that the character is not in the Marvel comics, and was written for the show by showrunner Dario Scardapane with Lillard specifically in mind.
So, who is Mr. Charles Daredevil: Born Again season 2? We've got everything you need to know (so far, anyway) below. It goes without saying, of course, that there are massive spoilers ahead for Daredevil: Born Again season 2 episode 1.
Who is Mr. Charles in Daredevil: Born Again season 2?
In Daredevil: Born Again season 2 episode 1, Daredevil stops an illegal arms deal from happening via boat. After the arms are smuggled, the crew is ordered by Wilson Fisk to scuttle the ship. Fisk pretends, of course, that Daredevil is behind the ship sinking – and the wreck is shown live on television. We cut to a man sitting at a bar, watching it all go down. He answers a burner phone and says to the unknown person on the other line that he plans to go out there himself, and that he could use the miles.
Back in New York, Fisk is visited by the Attorney General about both the ship capsizing and his tyrannical "Safer Streets" initiative. The same mysterious man from the bar crashes the meeting, wearing jeans and eating a gyro, and introduces himself as Mr. Charles. The Attorney General and the Lieutenant Governor are both pretty annoyed by Mr. Charles... who makes his power known by telling the AG to answer his phone. After a few moments on the call, the AG changes his tune and tells Fisk that he has his full support before leaving his office.
Later, Mr. Charles has dinner with Fisk and Vanessa at their home. He tells Fisk that the "people that he works for" are very grateful for the use of his "special port." He explains that his job is "logistics," saying point-blankly, "The corpses... that's easy. You just have to make sure that they sink to the bottom of the river.... but moving 30 metro tons of military ordnance across a major metropolitan area without a single fucking person knowing about it... that's not easy, man." After Fisk refuses to kill his men following the operation (to tie up loose ends), Mr. Charles offers to assemble a night crew whose deaths can be easily explained away in "an industrial accident." The two decide that their interests are aligned and strike a deal.
Now, all we can really deduce from the first episode is that Mr. Charles is a powerful, powerful man, one who doesn't seem to fear Wilson Fisk whatsoever. If he's able to kill a bunch of people and make it look like an accident and threaten the AG all in one fell swoop... he might prove to be a pretty big problem for Daredevil. Because we don't have any comic backstory to refer to, we'll just have to piece him together as we move through the series.
