2026 is turning into a banner year for indie horror game adaptations. In January, content creator-turned-filmmaker Markiplier shattered expectations with his self-funded adaptation of Iron Lung, while only last month, The Mortuary's Assistant sent a shiver down spines over on Shudder. And the biggest is yet to come – an adaptation of 2023's The Exit 8, which hits screens in April from Anora distributor Neon, and we've got an exclusive poster to prove it.
Like the game it's adapting, Exit 8 is set in a liminal Japanese metro station, where nothing is quite as it seems. After learning his girlfriend is pregnant and panicking at the idea of becoming a father, the film's protagonist (known only as The Lost Man) finds that he is trapped in an endlessly looping corridor. Illuminated by a set of arcane instructions, the Lost Man realises he must proceed to Exit 8 by identifying anomalies around him. Get it right, and he takes one step towards freedom. Get it wrong, and it's back to the beginning.
It's a nifty premise for a psychological horror, and has beaten A24's buzzy The Backrooms to the liminal space punch. Get a taste of what's in store via the new poster, which GamesRadar+ is pleased to debut exclusively below, featuring The Lost Man navigating a Möbius strip:
Exit 8 debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last year, where it screened out of competition, followed by screenings at the prestigious likes of TIFF and Sitges. Neon is set to release the film domestically, making it the acclaimed indie distributor's first ever video game movie release. The critical response has been glowing so far, with the film currently sitting on 97% over at Rotten Tomatoes from 38 reviews.
Exit 8 is one of many major video game adaptations hitting screens this year. Up next in less than two weeks is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, with the likes of Mortal Kombat 2, Resident Evil and Street Fighter to follow later in the year. We also just learnt that Jim Carrey is returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
Exit 8 releases in theaters on April 10 in the US, and in UK cinemas on April 24. For more, check out our list of upcoming video game movies.
