Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance options let you strike up relationships with various partners you meet during your adventures, as with this being a Bioware game there are a range of potential paramours to choose from regardless of your character's gender or race. When compared with previous instalments in the Dragon Age series, Inquisition features more opportunities than ever before for romance and sex, and thanks to developments you can now look beyond your group of companions to find a suitor – meaning the advisers are no longer off limits, if you have a preference for brains over brawn.

Thedas is a land rife with disorder, where it’s more practical for love in the moment rather than engaging in greater commitments like marriage, which is why the latter is unavailable in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Our guide will show you who you can seduce, and how to use your charisma and wiles to earn you and your potential lover a moment of intimate respite. Your choices for romance in Dragon Age: Inquisition break down into the following groups:

  • The least picky lovers: Iron Bull, Josephine Montilyet
  • Prefers female partners: Blackwall, Sera
  • Prefers male partners: Cassandra Pentaghast, Dorian Pavus
  • The pickiest lovers: Cullen, Solas

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance - Iron Bull

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance Iron Bull

Preference: None, open to all advances from any race and gender.

Romancing Iron Bull is very straightforward - complete his quests and stay flirtatious! Sex comes before romance with this guy and going steady means being the submissive. After you sleep with him be ready for some serious talk about relationships. Agree with these terms if you want this romance. This relationship includes a gift quest where you have to find a dragon and kill it. Use its teeth to make a necklace, a fitting gift for Iron Bull. This is when you can make your relationship public.

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance - Josephine Montilyet

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance Josephine Montilyet

Preference: None, open to all advances from any race and gender. Note that Josephine is an advisor in Dragon Age: Inquisition, not a companion.

Whereas Iron Bull’s romance requirements are the most straightforward, Josephine’s are the simplest. Start by talking with her in Skyhold and begin flirting. Eventually Leliana will ask about your romantic feelings and mention your attraction to Josephine. Then resume your flirtatious chats with Josephine.

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance - Blackwall

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance Blackwall

Preference: Female Inquisitors, open to all races.

If you’ve never romanced anyone in a Bioware game before, Blackwall is a great “gateway” love interest since he’s easy to get along with. Opportunities begin after Haven’s destruction, which is when you can tell him how you feel. He won’t be ready to return your feelings just yet, not until his quests are complete and you keep up that positive rating.

You’ll know things are going well if he calls you to The Storm Coast during his Gift Quest. Blackwall will eventually leave the party to fulfil his personal quest, Revelations. When he accomplishes this you can send him to the Grey Wardens or let him choose his own destiny.

Finally, look for Blackwall in the stables at Skyhold when he returns to the Inquisition to consummate the relationship.

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance - Sera

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance Sera

Preference: Female Inquisitors, open to all races.

Yes, Sera is open-minded about races, though expect an easier time if you’re a Qunari. It is also key to complete The Verchiel March mission. If you are already romantically involved with another character, Sera will ask you to talk to your love interest before any courtship with Sera can begin. This will then open the A Woman Who Wants For Nothing mission, which you need to complete. Finally you will need to make sure that all friend and friendship hub topics are done before you can be with Sera.

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance - Cassandra Pentaghast

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance Cassandra Pentaghast

Preference: Male Inquisitors, open to all races.

Much like the rest of the romantic options, the earlier you flirt with Cassandra, greater the likelihood of a romance. Best sure to complete the Unfinished Business and Promise of Destruction assignments, which are her Inner Circle Quests.

You cannot be a worthy suitor without knowing how to bestow tokens of affection. Ask Verric to create a new issue of Swords & Shields as it's a Guilty Pleasure of hers within her gift quest.

Even disagreements - if you truly believe your position is correct - can build a foundation for a relationship. Pay attention to a conversation with Cassandra at Skyhold. Disagree with Cassandra’s skepticism that something isn’t going to lead to anywhere. Keep disagreeing until she relents. She’ll admire your conviction.

A relationship with Cassandra is an exclusive one. You need to break up with her before you can pursue another love interest.

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance - Dorian Pavus

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance Dorian Pavus

Preference: Male Inquisitors, open to all races.

Dorian’s personal plot comes before romantic pursuits. First complete Last Resort of Good Men, then speak to Dorian about your feelings for him. Continue to stay romantic and eventually Leliana will bring Dorian’s romance plot, The Magister’s Birthright, to your attention. It is crucial you do not kill Pochard in order to continue your romance with Dorian. After you’ve finished this, find Dorian in Skyhold to consummate the relationship.

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance - Cullen

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance Cullen

Preference: Female Inquisitors, human and elven only. Note that Cullen is an advisor in Dragon Age: Inquisition, not a companion.

Cullen only likes fully unattached suitors. No options will be presented if you are currently in a relationship, so you will have to break things off you want to have a chance with Cullen. He also doesn’t like any subject matters involving Lyrium, so sure to avoid the subject. Regular conversations and flirtations will trigger the romance.

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance - Solas

Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance Solas

Preference: Female Inquisitors, elven only.

Keep flirting and give Solas replies that meet his approval. Once you’ve gotten some of his Approval Rating, bring him from Skyhold to Haven and kiss him. Solas will then entrust you with a request. He would like you to get in combat with a spirit, but instead of killing it, you have to free it. This will strengthen your Approval Rating. Do not expect to win any more approvals if you fail this mission.

Continue to flirt and impress him with your replies. To finally consummate the relationship, complete the Temple of Mythal mission.
