Gambit has been looking for a director for a while now, ever since Rupert Wyatt suddenly dropped out of the project last month, and though nothing has been confirmed, leading man Channing Tatum has someone in mind. The Magic Mike star is reportedly keen for Doug Liman to step into Wyatt’s shoes to direct the X-Men spin-off.
Jeff Sneider has reported that Tatum has been "courting" the Edge Of Tomorrow director, although he doesn’t claim to know whether or not Liman is keen on the project. Liman had previously been considering another collaboration with Tom Cruise, either on a sequel to Edge Of Tomorrow or on his long-gestating heist movie, Luna Park.
However, nothing official has been announced regarding either of those projects, so there’s every chance his schedule could be workable if Gambit were to tickle his fancy. With Tatum in place to star as the titular Cajun mutant, and Lea Seydoux rumoured to be playing his love interest, Gambit will open in the UK and US on October 7 2016.
