Cars 2 gets official

It’s a good day if you’re a fan of Pixar animation. Today Disney and Pixar announced their schedule for the next few years and though it looks like the reign of John Lasseter and Ed Catmull at Disney Animation will see a reinvigorated Mouse House release slate, there’s even more exciting stuff coming from Pixar.

While the official announcement that Pixar producing veteran Brad Lewis will direct Cars 2 for summer 2012 doesn’t fill us with quite as much joy as the other films – Cars wasn’t the studio’s finest moment, and it feels like the sequel is going into production for more commercial reasons than artistic – the team’s history has us convinced they wouldn’t do it unless they were sure they had a decent story.

More interesting is romantic comedy Newt, which will arrive in 2011 and be directed by sound expert Gary Rydstrom (who made the short Lifted) alongside The Bear And The Bow, Scottish-set tale of magic that Brenda Chapman will direct with the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson. Not only is it the first time for a female director at Pixar, it’s also the first time the company will release two films in one year.

Disney, meanwhile, has dog story Bolt, The Princess And The Frog, and the all-CG Rapunzel, with the intriguing-sounding King Of The Elves, adapted from Philip K Dick’s only dalliance with fantasy. Oh, and everything bar The Princess And The Frog will be in 3D.

Comingsoon.net is drawn to the full release.
