There's really no other way to put this, so better to just come out and say it: Mac from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is directing the Minecraft movie. Mojang announced earlier today that Rob McElhenney, who created and stars in the FXX comedy series, will lead the Warner Bros. produced picture.
The majority of McElhenney's credits come from It's Always Sunny, and judging by the below tweet, the film will retain his absurd sense of humor. Maybe fewer jokes about crack cocaine, though.
Hey @Mojang let's do something strange and wonderful.July 21, 2015
Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy was previously set to lead the Minecraft movie. His plan was to make the distinctly non-narrative game into a comedic adventure somewhere in the neighborhood of The Goonies, though he told The Wall Street Journal that Mojang seemed unimpressed by the concept and he subsequently left the production.
