CounterSpy brings mid-century mod to PS3, Vita

A cover-based Cold War shooter

Cold War chaos

Cold War chaos

CounterSpy is decidedly not a next-gen game, despite what it's surroundings may lead you to believe. Tucked away in a corner of Sony's private E3 palace, where the press and industry have their first opportunity to go hands-on with all-new PS4 wares, the Dynamighty-developed cover-based shooter stands out for its stylized Cold War aesthetic and classic side-scrolling platformer gameplay.

The setup is simple (or at least, simple enough): You play as a sleek super spy charged with infiltrating both sides of a brewing global conflict and knocking out their ability to instigate mutual destruction. The practicalities are equally straightforward, where you, the clandestine hero, stalk through mid-century bases, performing stealth kills or engaging in all-out firefights. Your reward? Money, upgrades, and a high score.

Dynamighty is designing the game to be as easy to use with a touch-screen device as it is a PS3 controller. And to a larger extent, the studio's been successful, where swiping in the desired direction yields a responsive back and forth movement, while a tap yields a jump. Where the touch-screen controls fall down, at least at the moment, is in the aiming of your characters gun, which appears to still be suffering from frustrating bugs that have led to an altogether unruly targeting reticule.

Still, CounterSpy has some time to go in development, as it isn't expected to arrive for the PS3 and PS Vita until this fall.
