Andrew Garfield not looking beyond a third Spider-Man film

Andrew Garfield has been discussing his long-term future as Spider-Man, and seems non-committal over the prospect of continuing the role beyond the three films he had initially agreed to.

“I mean I’m under contract for another one after this,” begins Garfield. “As far as a fourth one? That’s not anything to do with me.”

Meanwhile, the star has also been waxing lyrical about how the new film will be able to improve upon its predecessor...

“I think what we’re doing here is we’ve established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world. I think there was something missing in the first one because our focus wasn’t on character as much we were trying to keep a number of plates spinning in the air.

“'How can we reintroduce the character? How do we not upset this guy or this guy?’ That was a tough wasteland we had to move through. Now we could say, ‘Who is this guy?’ ‘How can we best serve Spider-Man?’”

It also sounds as though the sequel has an emotional punch to spring on the audience... “I sat with [ writers ] Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman in a restaurant for lunch in New York, and they pitched me this movie… And I was crying,” says Garfield.

“I was really emotionally moved by what they said to me. And I think a lot of my emotion was because these two guys love the character as much as I do.” The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will open in the UK on 18 April 2014.
