Everyone's weekend was made just a little better by the second Guardians of the Galaxy 2 trailer, but in all the excitement you might have missed a few key references and Easter eggs hidden in the footage. Never fear though, I'm here to point them out for you. Here's five things you might have missed from the new Guardians of the Galaxy 2 trailer...
Awesome Mix: Volume 2
One of the best things about Guardians of the Galaxy is the soundtrack, and I personally can't wait for Awesome Mix: Volume 2. The trailers are so far the only indication of what we can expect, so understandably we've sought out the song from this one. It's Fox on the Run by ‘70s glam band Sweet, from their 1974 album Desolation Blvd. Listen to it here.
A first look at Mantis
The second trailer gave us our first glimpse of Mantis - a well-known character from the comic books. Played by Pom Klementieff in the sequel, she embarrassed Star-Lord in the trailer using her telepathic powers, but did you know she was introduced in the comics as human? Created by Steve Engleheart and Don Heck, Mantis first appeared in Avengers #112 in 1973 and became a regular part of the Avengers cast. Obviously, the Guardians 2 movie is going in a completely different direction with the character.
Groot undressed
You might have noticed that during the hilarious 'Don't press the death button' sequence in the new trailer, Groot was completely undressed, just like his bigger Groot counterpart in the first movie. But did you realise that this is actually the only scene we've seen so far where he does so? In every other appearance baby Groot is wearing clothes, and not only that, but he's wearing what looks like Ravager garb. What does it mean?
Annihilation comic book shot
This could mean nothing but it's a nice little nod to the comic books. Check out the two shots above; one is from the new trailer, and the other is a splash page from the Annihilation comics. Both show Drax diving head first into a battle with one or more dangerous-looking aliens, and the 2006 comic storyline heralded a major shift in character for hero Drax. Could we see the same in the movie? Probably not, but it's a nice visual Easter egg.
"It's showtime, a-holes!"
Finally, the Guardians haven't forgotten where they've come from. The moment Star-Lord announces "It's showtime, a-holes!" in the trailer (see it at about 0.41) is a nice throw back to the moment Denarian Saal calls them this in the first trailer for the original movie.
