The seven titles are now available to Xbox Live members that were fortunate enough to obtain a place in the Preview Program. What's interesting about the titles is the game's pricing, which is listed in pound and pence, rather than in Microsoft Points. The titles currently available are as follows:

Call of Duty 2 - £19.99
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - £19.99
Need for Speed Carbon - £19.99
LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga - £19.99
Mass Effect - £19.99
Viva Piñata - £19.99
Assassin's Creed - £19.99

The remaining Games on Demand titles, revealed yesterday, will be rolled out over the next few days, before the new dashboard update is available to all Xbox Live users on the 11th August..."

Just a friendly public service announcement, folks. Bethesda Softworks just confirmed to me that the version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion that will be featured on Microsoft's impending Games On Demand downloadable service will be the original release of the game, not the Game of the Year edition that includes the downloadable expansions.

BioShock and Oblivion are two of the most innovative first person games released this generation, combined winning some odd 80+ Game of the Year awards. So when a press release went out earlier today revealing a software bundle containing the two, a lot of people's interests were piqued. However, the bundle will not be making it's way to the PS3. Curious, PS3Center contacted Bethesda to find out why.

Bethesda Softworks is celebrating April Fools' Day and the 3 year anniversary of the first Elder Scrolls: Oblivion downloadable content: the Horse Armor. Instead of the usual 200 Microsoft Points ($2.50), which stirred up some controversy for DLC pricing, the Horse Armor will 400 Microsoft Points ($5).

Here's what Bethesda Softworks had to say on it:
"In celebration of the arrival of April, the wackiness of April Fool's Day, and the upcoming 3rd anniversary of the release of Horse Armor (Friday, April 3), we are pleased to announce that for the next week all Oblivion DLC for Xbox 360 is half price, except for Horse Armor, which is twice as much as usual. So if you've been waiting for just the right moment to get The Vile Lair, or Knights of the Nine, or Shivering Isles, now is the time."

Gamer Limit doesn't just report on Bethesda's latest claim, they take a look into the amount of money they have made off of their DLC, and also comment on why gamers are disappointed with Horse Armor.

Just in case you never played Oblivion, here's a little backstory. Bethesda announced that they were releasing content that could be used in the Xbox 360 version of Oblivion, and gamers were immediately excited over the prospect of their favorite game getting new areas. However, while Bethesda did release a few new areas, they also sold another add-on: Horse Armor. What does horse armor do? Nothing. It makes your horse look cool. Many gamers bought the armor thinking that it would actually do something, then were thwarted by Xbox Live's "no refund policy".

As released by the Bethesda Blog, a list of the top Oblivion DLC has come out. According to the blog post, "To this day, 2 years later. Looking at our Xbox Live reports, every day, tens of thousands of people STILL play Oblivion and they purchase thousands and thousands of downloadable content - again, every day. Yes, even Horse Armor continues to sell daily."

Not shocking that many people still play Oblivion. Shocking that Horse Armor still sells daily - as it's ranked number 9 on the list. I would of thought the Shivering Isles expansion would have been at the top of the list, instead it ranks only one higher than the Horse Armor.

Here is the complete list:

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at a recent roundtable interview in London, Bethesda Softworks vice president Pete Hines has confidently declared that Fallout 3 is a better game than the highly praised The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Asked directly if he felt the review scores for Fallout 3 will beat those of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Hines wasn't to be drawn on Fallout 3's review scores, but did express his confidence in the game.

"I don't have any doubts that on the whole, and I think this is a belief universally shared on the team that Fallout is a better game," said Hines. "But we're also not oblivious to the fact that we have a lot of extra baggage that we're carrying, being the guys picking up this franchise, that are re-imagining this series from 10 years ago, and there's something that comes along with that. We're very well aware of what we're up against."

He added: "I have no doubts in my mind that, at its core and for everything that it provides that Fallout is a better game than Oblivion was. For sure."

Fallout 3 is more than just a sequel to one of the most beloved PC RPG series ever - it's also a spiritual successor to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, probably the single most ginormous game of the current console generation. Created by Bethesda, the same developer behind that sprawling fantasy epic, Fallout 3 has some pretty huge shoes to fill - but judging by what we've seen so far, it took one look, scoffed and is currently at work on an ...

MTV Multiplayer Blog writes: "It's only been this generation that downloadable content has become a viable opportunity on consoles, and the Entertainment Software Ratings Board finds itself in a position to regulate this uncharted territory of content.

"The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" expansion packs and the upcoming "Grand Theft Auto IV" upcoming add-ons represent the industry's most expansive departures from a game's original content. The catch: that content must remain consistent with the original rating branded by the ESRB.

New content cannot introduce elements that would alter the original rating, or the overall rating must change. ESRB president Patricia Vance explained what this meant for content makers at a MI6 Conference panel on marketing and user generated content last week."
There's more chatter over a possible Elder Scrolls MMO this morning, as crafty internet dwellers have discovered Bethesda's registration of elderscrollsonline.com.

The website is currently a dead end and Bethesda's Pete Hines says it's just nabbing URLs to prevent squatters getting there first.

Supporting the speculation is Bethesda parent ZeniMax's recent commitment to MMO development. Last week the company said it will be using funds from Providence Equity Partners for "future ...
Oct 11, 2007

You heard it here first - Bethesda will release a brand new add-on for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion next week called the Fighter's Stronghold. Actually, you did hear it here first, when we interviewed head PR honcho Pete Hines in February this year.

But enough blowing our trumpet (parp!). The new and exciting news is that Bethesda will offer Xbox 360 and PC gamers the add-on for nothing! Zilch, nada, zero. So long as you download it quick, that is. Pete Hines has revealed that ...

On top of all that is the obvious joy of owning an enormous fantasy property, with sprawling dining halls, wine cellars, barracks, training rooms, even an ancient Dwemer Forge that increases your Armorer skill - much like the Alchemy table in Frostcrag Spire. Beat that, Grand Designs.

Bethesda Softworks sent over a note announced they will release their last downloadable content extra for 2006's fantasy RPG The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The download, titled Fighter's Stronghold, will launch on Oct. 15 for both the PC and Xbox 360 versions and for the first week will be free to download.

On the Bethsoft blog site, PR head Pete Hines talks about the possible way they will bring the downloadable content to the PS3 version:

"Since we're talking about DLC, I thought I'd update you with what's going on with the PS3 version of Oblivion. We are close, very close to working something out to bring Shivering Isles to PS3 owners. That may be in downloadable form via PSN, or as a standalone retail disc, or both. I can't say definitively yet that it will happen, and I definitely can't say when. But it's looking good, and hopefully we'll have good news soon."

The friendly people over at Bethesda Softworks and Ubisoft have given us three large Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion T-Shirts to giveaway in a competition...

Due to shipping restraints, this competition will only be available to UK-based readers. However, don't feel left out as our next competition will feature worldwide prize distribution.

To enter, you must write a short blurb about what you like in the Oblivion franchise, in less than 200 words. Entries should be sent to seb.hayes [@] psu.com

The three winning entries will be selected based on what we feel were the best responses. The competition is ending on May 16th, so get your entries in as soon as possible. The prizes will be dispatched shortly after that date.

The cola wars used to provide the best example we had of a functioning free market. Whether you bled red for Coca-Cola or were true red, white and blue for Pepsi, most people had a preference and no one really could argue that they were all that different. It was a perfect competition.

These days, the battle for taste rages between Sony and Microsoft, between PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. "
Some hefty words of bravoda right there, but it looks like they are backing up there words so-far according to Heiko who got some hand on time with the PC version. Not only did he witness green hills, dense forests, swampland, picture-beautiful beaches, white glaciers, detailed vegetation with high draw distance, detailed animations using Motion Capturing and impressive weather and night and day cycles.

"We have verified there is a problem that can happen on the PC and we are still looking into whether it is possible on 360, since we don't have any reported cases on that platform so far and haven't been able to replicate it ourselves on that platform. We're testing a fix for it right now and hope to have it out as soon as possible. When we have more info, we'll let folks know."

Apparently a new bug has been popping in Shivering Isles and for the time being there is no way around it. Joystiq reports the problem has been determined to derive from six scripts which control the patrolling patterns of certain guards. The scripts, which run even if you are not in the area, exhausts the internal allotment of identification numbers which are assigned to every object in the game (e.g. dropped arrows, weaponry). Once all the space is full, newly created objects disappear from the game world.

The bug will occur if you have Shivering Isles installed, whether or not you even access the content. It will rear its ugly head 50 to 120 hours within gameplay, depending upon your framerate (we're not sure if this is hours of play after installation of expansion or total play time). The Xbox 360 version, running at 30 frames per second, is expected to hit the bug at 150 hours.
Elder Scrolls Puts Pressure On Retailers (News)

Bethesda's upcoming Elder Scrolls expansion pack on the 360, available only by download, will be double the cost of existing Xbox Live titles.

The Shivering Isles will set you back 2,400 Microsoft points, or about £19.35 for those of us still using real money. Previously the most you could pay was 1,200 points for the likes of Bankshot Billiards and Lumines Live.

SPOnG's not complaining, however. Bethesda's promising 30 hours of gameplay in the expansion. Further to that the PC version (which will sell through high street retailers) is going on sale for £19.99. Bethesda isn't ripping you off, here. This could mark the beginning of a worrying trend for retailers, however.

This is the first time a game of this size has been offered through Xbox Live. SPOnG asked a contact in retail how they felt about it. "That is quite worrying, if it's the start of a trend," SPOnG was told. "As this is the first of it's kind I'm not too worried in [i]this case. And I do think that people like to physically have something, like with CDs. But if more developers do this it could be a problem."
Bethesda has revealed that the Xbox 360 version of Oblivion expansion Shivering Isles, which to date has only be given an Xbox Live Marketplace release, could very well hit retail.

Raising hopes for Oblivion fans not hooked up to Live (though you should be by now, frankly), Shivering Isles senior game designer Bruce Nesmith told Gamertag Radio that an Oblivion compilation pack is planned.

"Eventually we will publish a complete version, a Game of the Year or Special Edition - I don't know ...
According to Nesmith, there will be a new special edition of Oblivion available at retail that will include all of the previously released content including the new Shivering Isles expansion. He also went on to say that there will be more downloadable content for Oblivion in the near future.

The answer is no, not really, Pete explained his opinion that they couldn't do an Elder Scrolls MMO "unless it was with some fresh idea that no one has ever tried before." This isn't an unqualified "no," though. "Certainly, there's a chance, it's something we've talked about, but it's not anywhere in our immediate future." The key is to come up with that "something new" that will work in an MMO environment, and as it stands with Oblivion on the one hand, and World of Warcraft on the other, it just won't work.
In short, it ruled.

How do we handle this? We're handing out our gleaming Platinum Chalice to those games and systems which gave us the business. No boring list of 37 different strategy games, divided ...
The fifth installment in pay-per-play expanded content for the already way-too-big Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion hits this week.
More chunks of the Oblivion world are being made available for download through Xbox Marketplace for 150 Microsoft Points and directly from the Oblivion site for $1.89. This latest addition encompasses a tower in the Jeral Mountains called Frostcrag Spire that, once downloaded, can be used as a home-base for wandering adventurers. Geared towards the more magically minded Obliviots, the Wizard's Tower can be upgraded to house an Enchanting and Spellmaking station and a laboratory that buffs ...
The Orrery, the latest chunk of downloadable content for the excellent Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, is now available for Xbox 360 via the Xbox Live Marketplace and for PC at Bethesda's Oblivion site. Costing 150 Microsoft points (about $2.00), it's a download that's around 9MB in size and offers a new quest centered on rebuilding a mysterious, conked-out backroom within the Arcane University.

We're a little torn about The Orrery - the new quest it offers is too brief and somewhat dim, ...
Bethesda has released a downloadable add-on for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which adds barding - that's horse armour - to the game. Xbox 360 owners can purchase the download for 200 Microsoft points (or £1.50) from Xbox Live, but PC users will have trot over to Bethesda's official site, and shell out $1.50 (about 85p) for their upgrade.

Tuesday 28 March 2006
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has pushed its way to the top of the all-formats sales chart in the UK, overtaking EA's The Godfather and Sony's Buzz! The Big Quiz in the process.

We always knew that Oblivion was riding high on people's most-wanted lists, but the finished article has managed to trump one of EA's biggest new properties, centred on one of the world's best-known movies. ...
So, what do you do, exactly? That's the thing; you pretty much make that decision yourself. ...
