Valve teases “top-secret” projects for Team Fortress 2

2012 is shaping up to be a transformative year for Team Fortress 2. This week, Valve outlined just some of the improvements and additions in store for the long-running multiplayer game, including a new “Meet the Team” entry, Steam blog, and top-secret projects.

“The TF2 team is working on something brand new for 2012. We can't tell you what it is, because they won't tell us, but what they WILL say is that it isn't a hat, it isn't a map, and go away,” said the studio in its latest blog update. “From this we can only conclude that the TF2 team is working on some ungodly hat-map hybrid that you can wear on your head while you run around in it. You heard it here first. Also last, because they just told us it's not that either. But it's
really cool.”

Also cool (well, technically “hot”) is the promise of a new “Meet the Team” video for the Pyro, which promises buckets of blood and more insight into his (or her?!) background. In addition, Valve has launched its Steam Workshop Blog, offering a consistent stream of news and updates for the Steam-based modding site that was glimpsed earlier this week in Bethesda's Skyrim Creation Kit preview.

Lastly, Valve hinted at the “imminent unveiling of another secret” which will make its second annual Saxxy Awards bigger and better than before, implying that at least one of the two surprises may have something to do with enhanced content creation tools.

Team Fortress 2 celebrates its 5-year anniversary this October, and its first full year as a free-to-play title in June. Those seems like a good causes for celebration. Also, hats.

WAIT! just thought of something spectacular! They release this "Meet the Pyro" video, and at the end of it, the pyro unzips his costume, and it's Gordon Freeman, here to announce Half Life 3! Now that'd be an awesome surprise.

Oh my god. Meet the Pyro will be the first "3" Valve has ever released. Pyro is the third selectable class. Which means.... OHMIGOSH HALF LIFE THREEEEEEE. Anywho, cant wait.

TF2 is fantastic, and it only got better with the F2P, but i'm hoping they will be announcing a TF3 sometime with an updated engine. Source is looking pretty old sometimes, (although TF2's art style is timeless.) A TF3 is unlikely, TF2 is already multiplayer perfection, but I'd like to see how they can improve on perfection!

I'm one of the people who bought TF2 before it went F2P. Whilst the ones who bought it were eventually screwed (all we got was a free hat for buying the game, seriously?!), I'm very excited for the new update, and goddangit I want more hats!

@adrianc1982 erm, they haven't added anything that makes you fly... they were either rocket/sticky jumping or someone was using noclip. but if you prefer TF2 without all the new hats and weapons, there's always Vanilla servers

Not that I hate TF2, or that I'm not excited about this, but it makes me sad knowing every time I see an announcement like this means that Valve are not presently working on Half-Life...

I've been playing TF2 since it went free-to-play and it has only gotten better. Servers only take a few seconds to load, new weapons are awesome and it has a large community that just keeps me coming back. I still pick it up and play it every once in a while and can't wait to see this top-secret project. @adrianc1982: You probably went into a modified server which you can easily avoid by just using the play button instead of browsing the servers.

    There is never enough hats!

For me tf2 has been broken for a while, it takes an eternity to get into an actual server, its just TOO slow and whats the matter with the loading screens? For my taste its too complicated now, too many rules, I stopped playing about a year and a half ago and I tried to come back and give it a try just to find people flying!!! I know there must be a reason for that, but I have to study to know how to do it as the game for me didnt offer that insight. Its not as simple to pick up and play like it was before when the orange box launched.
