Good article Ashley. I think the Iran one me laugh because as you said US products are banned from being sold there anyway. The Venezuela case is pure crazy, fair enough somebody thinks it could help, but has the country become a peaceful South American paradise since the ban?

Brazil actually has this law that labels videogames as "gambling games" (the term in full Portuguese is "Jogos de Azar" - "Bad Luck Games"), but that's not for banning but for tax purposes. While in Brazil it is now illegal to own casino slot machines, there was a time where entire estabilishments (called "Bingos", kinda like a casino, only not with hotels or shows or sports events integrated to them) were pulverized along the entire country. So in order to take some money back from the owners of such places, the government raised all taxes on purchasing and owning slot machines, as they were imported. Videogames fell under the same category because, well, their argument was "slot machines = a videogame...sort of...". Fast-forward to 2014 and slot machines are fully illegal now, but the law still exists and it affects videogame-related prices nationwide. A regular edition launch game can cost up to 90 dollars - and don't even get me started on PS4's price here....

Ban hammer running wild and you know what people are always going to complain.

No games are banned in Greece except Manhunt which (as you said) is banned pretty much everywhere. Just saying!
  • kyle94 - July 18, 2014 9:48 a.m.

You didn't read it, did you? "The EU promptly slapped the government of Greece with an injunction for being dumb, and the ban was allowed to quietly lapse three years later."

Anybody else think Dead Rising 3 being band in Germany is ironic because Carmagedon changed from humans to zombies and got a pass and in Carmagedon you were encouraged to aim for them for cash and time, where as dead rising 3 you're defending your self and trying to save people?

I wish there was a proper game that depicts Israel/IDF in a negative light - if only to see the response and learn whether we have a regulatory body for videogames. Only games to fit the bill so far are indie "Freedom Fighter Simulators" which are usually reskins of classic FPSs, nothing you'd find on Steam, Gamestop, etc.

What's going on in Brazil? most of these bans make at least a little bit of sense, but banning bully because it takes place in a school and banning Counter Strike for having a favela map but not MW2 even though it had something similar? wtf

I remember this case, as I was working in a gaming mag here in São Paulo. There was a whole lot more context on this particular ban than GamesRadar lets off. Back at the same time, we were having issues with teenagers fighting for no good reason on school grounds, and the government felt a game like Bully would be a desservice, encouraging kids to keep fighting. Now, I know what you're thinking: Bully had an Over 18 rating (I think) and kids should not be playing this anyway - but while Brazil does have an age rating system specifically for videogames, it has little to no control over who buys what. But still, it was a dumb ban anyways, as most of school fighting cases were really over grudges and quickly solved, never escalating to things as serious as portrayed in the game. As for CS/MW, well, that was really stupid.

Wasn't there a game on the Sega CD I think it was night trap were u raid girls house. It was horrible didn't that get ban in the states
  • DirkSteele1 - July 18, 2014 6:20 a.m.

Actually in that game it was your job to protect the girls from bad guys but it was completely misrepresented by the media at the time. Never let the truth get in the way of a good bit of outrage.

I liked this list, it got more and more ridiculous as it went on. The last one in particular... Greece : ELECTRONICS BAD, NO ELECTRONICS Rest of world : What the hell are you doing?

Playing as a Taliban sounds pretty damned fun, imo, since everywhere else you just mow down tons of dark skinned people. Nice to see some change in that. Maybe in another game we can play as atheists murdering gun-weilding religious nut jobs, too.
  • GOD - July 17, 2014 7:54 p.m.

That list just got better and better. Great read. Also you can tell what countries don't like freedom of speech if they ban a game featuring them....
  • March-Cyanide - July 17, 2014 5:49 p.m.

The lesbian thing was quite bizzare, game bans suck especially when it 's over history, a current event or just a social issue in society in the certain area.

--im so hoping R* is developing a new manhunt game --one that has been in development for years --it would take the entire world by storm
  • GR_RyanTaljonick - July 17, 2014 4:26 p.m.

    dare to dream
  • _--_ - July 17, 2014 7:15 p.m.

--did R* ever announce that 'new game announcement' they had spoken of? --did it just end up being --gta5 on 8th gen? --i thought they were announcing a new game to come out next year???
  • homestar99 - July 17, 2014 8:50 p.m.

They're probably going to do their actual announcement after GTA V Next-Gen/PC goes Gold. All I know is that people are going to say Manhunt 3 or Agent and it's going to be neither. I really want it to be Manhunt or Agent, though.
  • _--_ - July 17, 2014 9:54 p.m.

--yeah its not agent --but im not sure why it couldnt be manhunt --its about time for a proper R* sequel in that franchise --and out of their existing franchises --its the one that would draw the most interest and controversy --and that --is what R* is ALL about --but --it has been A WHILE since manhunt 2 --and --bully would probably do okay too --but --i dont know --im just not all that 'excited' about a new bully
