Jake Logan from Tachyon: The Fringe sure would have been a good one to give a nod to here. Voiced by Bruce Campbell, how can you not give him a top 100 rating?
  • potarto72 - March 8, 2013 6:48 p.m.

They forgot Wander from Shadow of the colossus. which honestly, although i FREAKING LOVE ZELDA TO THE DEATH... i think should be number one.

OK, first of all: I'm VEEERY happy to see that neither Cloud or Sephiroth are in the list, seriously they are the most overrated game characters ever, they are extremely generic and are already topped by many other FF saga characters. But then...the number 1...why the hell Link? what does Link do? nothing, he has no personality, literally, he doesn't talk, he doesn't do crap, hell he isn't even the same guy across the saga. The reason why I hate this list is because they ALWAYS end up mixing "Great character" with "Bad character who was in a good game". Link has absolutely no merits on his own to be in a list like this because he has absolutely no personality, they always put him in these things because of the game he is in, not because of who he is (hint: no one)
  • MichielvT - December 8, 2013 1:23 p.m.

I made an account just to answer this question. The very reason why Link is so popular and the perfect hero is because he IS no one. A perfect, opinionless embodiment for anyone. It's very easy to immerse in the Legend of Zelda games because it isn't about a shaky character with doubtful motives, but rather the heroes' call we all know. A journey we all fantasize about. A greater calling from something undefined and in a sense divine. We don't even know what it is that's calling us. The feeling we get from the Zelda games is very personal, and it works all the better to have such an open, easy-to-like character as Link. Those are just my 2 cents.
  • dumbstep - June 2, 2014 2:02 p.m.

what? link deserves the spot, he is a true hero, who said a hero has to speak or have a cool personality, are you seious? a hero is a hero because of what he does not what he says, and let me tell you link is an absolute hero.
  • darragh-mahon - October 7, 2013 5:55 p.m.

I'm sorry but I fail to see how you can't have Cloud in this list? Even Tidus or Leonhart. As for Dovahkin, he can be a hero or villain. You control the character right? Then you cant put Enzo down at all then.. bad list. No way is link 1. Mario if anyone? First original hero

At the risk of violating the most important rule on the internet: "Avoid 'net fights" I created an account on gamesradar for one purpose only. To refute your placing of Commander Shepherd at 99. You are wrong. Shepherd was a human soldier; not Superman, with his god-like abilities, or Batman, with his inexhaustible resources and custom made bat-toys. Shep wasn't bestowed supernatural abilities from a higher source or made indestructible or immortal by a freak accident, mutation or lab accident. Shep was just a soldier, admittedly, an outstanding one, but Shep was only human. Shep was a team player, with the backing of people who believed in Shep's cause. Shep brought allies, friends and even foes together though acts of bravery and selflessness. Shep's leadership, comradery, trust and charisma united the many races of aliens to rally against a foe that was clearly superior in every way. Who was the antagonist? Let me remind everyone that this foe was a race of skyscraper sized robots that cleaned the ENTIRE galaxy of ALL technologically advanced life every 50,000 years. They had been doing this for possibly MILLIONS of years. To date, they have never been stopped, they have never been defeated. To sum it up all sports like: All intelligent life VS The reapers, Life:0, Reapers: countless times. Reapers win hands down. To date, the Reapers have been kicking intelligent life's daddy-bags so hard that it isn't even a contest. Was Shep perfect? Nope. Sure, perhaps Shep sometimes had to make a lose-lose call. Sure, Shep could sometimes be violent, even punching out reporters (They had it coming and you know it!) Could anyone perform as admirably if they were put in Shep's shoes? Maybe, but very few could. (I didn't see any other SPECTREs saving the day, well Williams/Alenko, but not to the extent that Shepherd had) But that is what makes Shep such a big dam hero. Shep wasn't perfect, Shep wasn't superhuman. Not only did Shep prove his/her skills in negotiation, leadership and diplomacy. Shep was also a master tactician and warrior. He pulled off the impossible not just once, but several times, how many times did you experience sphincter clenching while playing Commander Shepherd? I'll bet it was at least more than once! Remember the final run in ME2? You'd be lying if you could say you knew for certain Shep would make that jump. Remember the first time you played through it? Not entirely sure you made all of the right choices? completed all of the right missions? Yea... You puckered up when Shep leapt towards the Normandy, we all did. How many other video game heroes gave you that experience? Shep's strength in heroism lies in the fact that Commander Shepherd was fallible, imperfect, mortal, but against all odds, in a war that has been waged and lost countless times, Shepherd knowingly "Boldly rode and well,Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of Hell" Oh, and I forgot to mention that Shep DIED! depending on how one played the game, died twice. Death couldn't even stop this hero. He was brought back by an enemy, who believed in Shep and his/her cause so much that billions... maybe even trillions of our equivalent of dollars were spent on a project that had the sole purpose of re-animating just ONE individual. Did Shep come back as a zombie? Nope, Did he come back with supernatural powers? Nope. Did he call it quits to start a new life endorsing stores on the citadel? Well, kinda. But Shep didn't quit. That's the point. Shep didn't quit when good friends died, Shep didn't quit when all appeared lost, Shep never quit. And you placed Commander Shepherd 99 out of 100, below such noble heroes as: Mario: Heroic feat; Hitting blocks to win his psudo-girfriend's freedom Frogger: Heroic feat; Crossing a road and a river. Parappa the Rapper: Heroic feat; rapping and dancing Pac-Man: Heroic feat; eating yellow ghost-turds to win his girlfriend's freedom. Phoenix Wright: Heroic feat; being a lawyer.... A lawyer. Donkey Kong: Heroic feat; Collecting bananas and smashing things, Why? I don't even remember Garrus Vakarian: Heroic feat; Being Commander Shepherd's right hand man. (Garrus is a hero, but if Shep never picked him up, would he of had the opportunity to prove it? As bad-ass of a hero he is, he still remains Shep's sidekick, which should tell you something about Shep.) That was just a few examples I could do this for hours, but you get the point, you placed all of these characters above Commander Shepherd. How much thought did you really put into this list? Let's bring my ramble back into focus: The stakes were never higher, the odds have never been as low in any video game EVER. The fate of the ENTIRE galaxy hangs in the balance. Shep cowboy'd the *%$# up and did his job, saved the galaxy and you placed Commander Shepherd at 99? I should go..

  • luke-reid - August 1, 2014 1:08 a.m.

Great list. All wonderful and memorable characters. Looking over the comments however, I'm reminded of how the internet gives a voice to so many that should not speak
  • andrew-tucker1 - November 27, 2013 3:52 p.m.

mastercheif should be higher in my opinion he has such an amazing story behind him
  • chlarkafterdark - December 5, 2013 11:12 a.m.

You forgot: Poke Trainer. He only saves the world all the time and catches a whole new generation of pokemon for a lazy ass professor ALL THE TIME Luigi. Why is he not on here Atlas and P-Body. Portal 2 protagonist's should be on here saving this list from the likes of this Glad0s generated list Chelle: Portal bad ass extraordinaire Chris Redfield Altiare
  • gilgamesh310 - February 1, 2014 5:22 p.m.

This list is a fucking joke. The top ten in particular is garbage. The whole criterion is garbage and hypocritical!
  • kuba-pankiewicz - February 21, 2014 2:27 p.m.

Snake should be number 1 then Drake and Altair should be last he's the world ac character
  • lewis-birchnall - March 5, 2014 1:25 p.m.

The list forgot the following...The Lone Wanderer, The Vault Dweller, The Courier(Fallout Series) Chell (Portal 1+2), Artyom (Metro+Metro Last Light) Frank Woods, Alex Mason, Gaz, Soap Mactavish (Call Of Duty Series)
  • 50scent - March 11, 2014 10:37 p.m.

No Pokemon is ridiculous. Second biggest video game franchise and multiple choices to add (Ash, Pikachu, Ash's whole team). The fact there's nothing representing Pokemon makes this list nothing but invalid.
