The eight most talked about stories of the week (15-19 Feb, 2010)

A lot can happen in gaming over the course of a week. But why sift through it all yourself when you can catch up on the most important stories right here? These are the news snippets that we've been talking about this week.

Street Fighter IV coming to iPhone

Nobody saw this one coming. Street Fighter IV is coming to Apple's handheld devices and it looks impossibly close to the PS3/360/PC versions. The touch screen controls only feature four face buttons, but that shouldn't hurt the gameplay too much, considering Alpha 3 runs beautifully on GBA. Quite how we're going to pull off charged Ultras on the touchscreen is anyone's guess, but the fact this exists at all is frankly awesome. And if iPhone can do it, surely PSP can too?

Always-online DRM arrives, causes outcry

Ubisoft has been threatening to do this for a while, but it's finally here. Digital Rights Management (an anti-piracy measure, for the uninitiated) that only lets you play your newly-purchased game if you're connected to the internet. If your connection drops out, so do you - from your game. Unsaved progress lost, teeth gnashed to a fine powder… bit of a mess, really. It's here right now in Assassin's Creed 2 on PC and will feature in all Ubisoft's future games. Ubi has responded to PC Gamer's questions this very day if you want to hear what's going on from the horse's mouth.

Epic cocky kill fail on MW2

Another week, another fantastic fail video from Modern Warfare 2. That chat window is up for such a long time, especially if you can't be bothered to hook up a USB keyboard. We do wonder why so many people are recording video of their Xbox 360 while they play online to catch this sort of thing, though. Is it really 'just in case', or do they watch it all back later with a beer? Still, if it keeps on giving us as much entertainment as this, then carry on, we say.

Somebody's crap at Sonic 4

A new shakycam video surfaced this week, showing an Alpha build of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1. Admittedly, it was a little hard to tell how the game plays because the guy playing it clearly has no idea what he's doing. Oh, and we're guessing the crying child won't be featured on the game's soundtrack. Interesting to see from the level select screen in the video that the special stage appears to be similar to Sonic 1's rotating maze. Interesting because that's the least ambitious design they could have possibly chosen. Meh.

Sony says this. Microsoft says that

A mini-war of corporate words between Sony and Microsoft broke out like a mild case of milk rash on a baby this week. First up, Sony man Rob Dyer had a bunch to say to Industry Gamers about PlayStation being a better platform for third-party publishers and that it bested Microsoft when it came to first-party developers. But then he would say that.

A few hours later and Microsoft man Aaron Greenberg said in an interview with OXM and CVG that Xbox 360 had more exclusives than any other platform. We guess Wii doesn't come under its definition of "any other platform". He also boasted that 360 had the most blockbuster titles coming this year. But then he would say that.

In the beginning, Kratos was... a little elf?

Game characters don't come much more pissed off and macho than God of War's Kratos. But, before the direction of the game had been nailed down, one of the early designs had him pegged as a little elf, complete with Disney-style animations.

All we can say is thank Christ that David Jaffe steered things in the much more appealing direction of a bald-headed man raging through ancient Greece and gratuitously sticking it to a few gods. Little Elf just doesn't sound as epic as God of War. And there's no way there'd be any wench shagging.

Australian politician feels threatened by gamers. Prefers bikers

The week's most bizarre quote came from South Australia's Attorney-General and all-round moral guardian, Michael Atkinson. These are the words he said: "I feel that my family and I are more at risk from gamers than we are from the outlaw motorcycle gangs who also hate me."

What frightening turn of events brought him to this conclusion? According to Atkinson he had a "threatening note from a gamer" pushed under his door at 2 in the morning. Outlawed bikers - who also have a sincere disliking of him - have never perpetrated such a crime of out-of-hours letter delivery.

The kerfuffle comes from Atkinson's opposition to the introduction of R-rated games in Australia, which would stop the ban hammer being so readily used on games there. The R stands for restricted. At present, films can be given an R18+ classification, but games can't.

And what threatening message did the note deliver? If the one used in this video is an accurate mock-up, it was "O HAI MICK. I CAN HAS R18 RATING PLZ? KTHXBAI"

TheTekken movie stills don't make Tekken movie look any less crap

Tekken. The movie. We've seen the trailer and were this week treated to a bunch of stills. Sure, it's destined to be a filmic craptacular, but it's still interesting to see the Iron Fist hopefuls make the jump to the big screen. Or maybe just straight-to-DVD.

Either way, we'll give it a watch. Just to see if Kuma puts in a cameo. And to respectively observe Candice Hillebrand going at it as Nina Williams.

Above: OK, keep holding your breath. Aaaand... cut. Great job everyone

You can find all the stills over at CVG.

Oh god, tekken is already looking like it will be awful, then again, when is that a surprise? I will say though, they did a great job getting someone who looks alot like Bryan Fury.
  • DrLovez69 - February 19, 2010 3:52 p.m.

  • Corsair89 - February 19, 2010 5:06 p.m.

  • gannsi - February 19, 2010 6:02 p.m.

the call of duty video is so funny
  • D0CCON - February 19, 2010 6:47 p.m.

I feel so sorry for Australian gamers. How the (explitive) does that come even close to threatening? He's covering his ass because he doesn't want to give up his hunger for pointless power. (btw, the two words I had to type to post this comment are "reviling Government" I am amazed.)
  • saya-MON - February 19, 2010 6:59 p.m.

Call of duty video was hilarious, should of just typed "behind you!"
  • Ru89 - February 19, 2010 7:14 p.m.

  • ventanger - February 19, 2010 7:22 p.m.

  • Cyberninja - February 19, 2010 10:18 p.m.

the best platform for third party devlopers is easily the dreamcast
  • OmNomRomRearghNergh - February 19, 2010 10:51 p.m.

I hate my country's government so very often. But top marks to the guy who did the letter :) so funny
  • RebornKusabi - February 19, 2010 11:35 p.m.

That has to be the most threatening note I have ever seen! If you read between the lines of the note, you see the deep, dark, cold eyes of an unsympathetic killer! This has to stop because these gamers are a threat to our normal everyday way of life- more than Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden! ... i can haz faxnuz positin??
  • sleepy92ismypsn - February 20, 2010 2:11 a.m.

what does that note with the letter cut outs say?
  • Cwf2008 - February 20, 2010 3 a.m.

Haha that CoD fail video was hilarious. But i can see why that Aussie is so threatened, i mean first their asking for an R rating for games, next there gonna try to usurp him. Besides everyone knows gamers are far more terrifying than outlaw bikers who idk use guns and high speed motorcycles? What a fucking idiot. @sleepy92: It says "O HAI MICK. I CAN HAS R18 RATING PLZ? KTHXBAI" Right above the picture too -_-
  • EnragedTortoise1 - February 20, 2010 3:33 a.m.

I love the sniper's comment after the kill-"Oh, sh*t man, you're an amateur..." Lol. O HAI MICK I CAN HAs R18 RATING PLZ KTHNXBAI wait, that's supposed to be threatening?
  • Kenzo - February 20, 2010 4:42 a.m.

I laughed so hard at the COD video. thats something I can see one of my friends doing
  • philipshaw - February 20, 2010 11:30 a.m.

Lol @ COD vid. Also the elf coustume should be an unlock in GOW3
  • halomech15 - February 20, 2010 3:21 p.m.

I'm gonna take a guess here; Ubisoft just doesn't get it.
  • GameManiac - February 20, 2010 4:51 p.m.

No WONDER kratos is always pissed off...
  • crimson_soulreaper305 - February 20, 2010 8:09 p.m.
