Syfy channel to produce Red Faction movie, calamity awaits

Next March, fans of THQ’s Red Faction series should probably avoid tuning into the Syfy channel for at least a couple weeks. Fans of low-budget sci-fi flicks with corny acting and lame special effects, however, should tune into Syfy for the premiere of the live-action movie Red Faction: Origins.

That’s right – in March 2011, the same channel that brought us such blockbuster pictures as Rock Monster and - who could forget - Dinocroc vs. Supergator, will be airing its latest original production, a 2-hour movie based on the long-running Red Faction franchise as part of the series’ 10th anniversary.

The movie will take place in the Red Faction universe between the latest release, Red Faction: Guerrilla, and the upcoming Red Faction: Armageddon, which will be available for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in March 2011 (what a coincidence!).

Above: The latest screen from Red Faction: Armageddon

Hero Alec Mason’s son Jake, a member of the dwindling Red Faction Militia, must make his way across the brutal Martian landscape as he is plagued by the threat of a “powerful new enemy.” At least, that’s what the official movie description says. Throw in some drama about a family torn apart by futuristic warfare and you’ve got a pretty typical action movie.

The screenplay was written by Andrew Kreisberg, which will make it his very first. Kreisberg has written the scripts for a handful of TV shows including Fringe and The Vampire Diaries. Needless to say, this won’t exactly draw the same level of success as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, but for the sake of people who actually care about Red Faction, we hope it will at least be a little better than House of the Dead.

Does Red faction really have enough substance to base a TV show on it?

They could at least have Bruce Campbell in it. I can bear Alien Apocalypse because of that man.

we all know that name isn't going to last, it just doesn't have that syfy channel feel, it will probably end up being something more like red faction: large hammer swinging man versus giant killer acid spitting dinosaur eating mammoth leviathin monolithic rampaging aliens from space

I still can't believe they are sticking with SyFy This will be a disaster.

Red Faction was shit at Red Faction 2. The first was the first PS2 game i played and i loved it. The setting, story and Geo-mod was amazing and i believe the multiplayer has only been bettered by Timesplitters 2. How i wished for a red faction film. Total Recall esque film with lots of shooting...Looks like that dream is now a nightmare...

at least the writer seems ok - fringe is a brilliantly written show. Unless he did the musical one. That wasnt so good.

Eww, SyFy. Any company that changed its name to a misspelling is not the company for me. Got to admire the perseverence, however.
