Red Faction: Battlegrounds all about ‘blowing shit up’

Today, THQ announced Red Faction: Battlegrounds, the first DLC game set in the Red Faction universe. The multiplayer-focused title is all about vehicular combat, and pits mechs against tanks and buggies. Red Faction was famous for its destructible environments - and THQ plans to stay true to that element of the series.

“Just as in other Red Faction games, you can pretty much blow up everything. Only this time, you do it with your friends using hulking mechs, armored tanks and combat walkers,” explains THQ’s Kevin Kraff in a prepared statement. The game will allow for four players at a time locally or online. So far, the modes that have been announced are Survival, Annihilate, and Flag Frenzy. But it looks like there’ll be a King of the Hill mode as well.

Red Factions: Battlegrounds will be playable at Gamescon 2010 in Cologne Germany and is scheduled to release in 2011. We like the look of Battlegrounds so far. You can check out the first screenshots and trailer below.

Above: This screenshot from THQ was titled ‘King of the Hill.’ Sounds like this could be the name for an unnanounced mode

Kinda looks like fusion frenzy, except a lot more fun with a franchise, Guerrilla was awesome tho!

I fail to see how destructible environments could work, but if they can make a decent game out of this, then whoop-tee-doo. I just hope that the other Red Faction is a FPS. I was a huge fan of the first 2, but the third, well, let's just say I was looking at it for £8 (on PS3), and I didn't buy it, purely because it was 3rd person. It really spoils the fun of blowing yourself a makeshift tunnel to flank through, y' know?

@brickman409: "Demons of the Badlands" was the first DLC for Red Faction: Guerrilla. Followed by the multiplayer map pack and then the Wrecking Crew "Smasher Pack". This is a vehicle combat game for XBLA and PSN. This is not DLC for RFG or the new Red Faction game. From what I know, this title isn't even being produced by Volition Inc.
