New Resident Evil Outbreak is a “social survival horror” game for phones

Resident Evil Outbreak 1 and 2 were multiplayer cult hits on the PS2. But the next game to bear the ‘Outbreak’ banner will be a social game for cell phones - not exactly what series devotees had expected.

The new game, Resident Evil: Outbreak Survive, will launch on GREE, a Japanese mobile social game platform with millions of subscribers. The third entry in the Outbreak series is expected to release sometime in June, 2011.

Like most social games, it will be free-to-play with support from micro-transactions. Players will assume the role of Raccoon City survivors and have to work together to accomplish various missions. Capcom is referring to the title as a 'social survival horror' game. Players will be able to send healing items to each other, and have friend they've rescued join their team.

And to think after I saw the teaser for Operation Raccoon City, I said they couldn't possibly rape the Resident Evil franchise worse. Congratulations universe, you win.
