Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 3 still top Xbox Live

An entrenched observer of gaming culture might think that Modern Warfare, and by extension, Call of Duty, is over. We're embedded in communities of hardcore gamers who, if they'll even bother to acknowledge its existence, have only venom to spew at the franchise. They cite MW2's lack of balance, glitches, the exodus from Infinity Ward, and... just Activision, as detractors. And don't even bother talking about Halo 3, that old, withered dinosaur.

But step back and look at what people are actually playing, and the story is entirely different. This morning, Major Nelson posted a chart of the most played (by unique users) games on Xbox Live for the week of March 29th. Modern Warfare 2 tops it, followed by Halo 3. Battlefield: Bad Company 2, a game being heralded by fans as the most superiorest new FPS on the market, comes in at three. It's not exactly surprising, but still, balls.

Here's the whole list:

1. Modern Warfare 2
2. Halo 3
3. Battlefield Bad Co. 2
4. Call of Duty: WaW
5. FIFA 10
6. Call of Duty 4
7. Game Room
9. Gears of War 2
10. Left 4 Dead 2
11. Forza Motorsport 3
12. Splinter Cell Conviction Demo
14. NBA 2K10
15. Halo 3: ODST
16. Just Cause 2 Demo
17. Madden NFL 10
18. Borderlands
19. NHL 10
20. Assassin's Creed II

Its mad Halo 3 is still up there. Not surprised with Fifa as its huge in the UK. However not surprised with Modern Warfare 2 presence despite believing Bad Company 2 is a better LIVE experience. I like both but the lack of team work in Modern Warfare 2 just ruins the experience for me. Playing Bad Company 2 with a group of friends of meeting people is in my mind the best online war game experience you'll find.

its not just the multiplayer aspects of the games that count (clearly since assassins creed is up there) those are just the most played games that people connected to xbox live play.

@ Embolado: Yup that's it exactly it. while it's safe to assume a majority of MW2 players are actually playing multi; I imagine the Solo game is what keeps GTA up there. Just a guess though.

Halo 3 and MW2's fans mainly hale from the realm of casual gamers, which explains its dominance on the charts. They're way too over-rated. I bought all three of the latest Call of Duty games, and every time I stop because I cannot stand the annoying online community.

Its pretty surprising that demoes can still achieve a spot in the top 20, even after the game has come out.

i can say i definetly went back to World at War for my Call of Duty Fix, MW2 did not cut it at all.

Yeah I bitch about Modern Warfare 2 but I still pick it up for quick multiplayer sessions despite the problems. I can't help it, that level up guitar riff is addicting!

World at war has staying power like that? That's really suprising.
  • Doorstop - April 7, 2010 7:51 p.m.

My question is how is Assassin's Creed II on there?
  • Embolado - April 7, 2010 7:40 p.m.

Can you really play Final Fantasy XIII on xbox live? Guess it only reflects what games you play while connected to xbox live.

FIFA beats out CoD 4? I didn't think FIFA was that popular, ever for an EA game.

Im surprised Halo 3 is still played so much on xbox live. I would think at least some people would get bored with it by now. I own a PS3 and MW2. Im not hatin on the game or anything, but it definitely isnt as fun anymore as i thought it would be. I played Modern Warfare for like a year before i got bored with it. Ive only been playin mw2 for a few months now and im done with it. I just think one reason so many people give grief over MW2 is that you dont need as much skill in this game compared to modern warfare. Seriously, all you need to do is get your killstreak going and it does all the work for you. Case in point: get 5 kills for a predator missile, kill 1-2 people with that, get harrier strike, kill 1-2 people with that, use a pavelow, kill some more people with that So essentially you just need the five kills and the rest will take care of itself.

I know right? I'd definitely have expected L4D2 to have eclipsed GTA.
  • Felixthecat - April 7, 2010 6:20 p.m.

Mama mia. I have personally not got BF:BC2 because I simply have no money, but I'm shocked that it hasn't at least even taken Halo 3's position. Also, GTAIV is higher than L4D2? Wow, I am a huge GTA fan, but I only played online once and barely any people were online.
