The first Guild Wars was a bit of a surprise when it arrived in 2005, less than a year after the staggeringly successful launch of World of Warcraft. Its approach to the MMO genre was unique, especially considering that it avoided the least-beloved aspect of MMOs that were being released at the time: a subscription fee. An MMO without a monthly tithe was a relatively rare concept in those days--but it paid off for ArenaNet, with over six million copies of the game and its expansions being sold over its lifespan. One good turn deserves another, of course, and ArenaNet has been developing the sequel to the game, succinctly titled Guild Wars 2, since 2007. And now it’s finally here!
You'd think that five years of development would result in a big game, and, well...you'd be right! Guild Wars 2 ups the ante for the Guild Wars franchise, largely moving away from the heavily-instanced world of Guild Wars in favor of an expansive, open landscape. You'll find yourself battling alongside dozens, or even hundreds, of your fellow players in both PVE and PVP. The world is huge, and it's packed to the gills with interesting environments to explore, merchants to visit, quests to undertake, and, of course, monsters to kill.
Whether you're a veteran of MMOs like Guild Wars and World of Warcraft or a complete neophyte to the ways of massively-multiplayer gaming, GamesRadar's Beginner's Guide to Guild Wars 2 will walk you through the basics of character creation, exploration, crafting, and more. It should be all you need to pop into the game and begin your journey to eliminate the Elder Dragons' control over Tyria. So what are you waiting for?
