Looks like the Jim Henson Company isn’t done rifling through its archives to find characters to spin into movies. With a Dark Crystal sequel already in the works, the Henson team has announced that it will next turn its attention to bringing the inhabitants of Fraggle Rock to the silver screen.
Those of you who remember the '80s television series (and those who have been introduced to the colourful creatures via the DVD releases) know that the likes of Gobo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red are creatures that live in the ground beneath a lighthouse. They’re constantly amazed by the adventures of Gobo’s Uncle Matt, who ventured into “outer space” (AKA our world) and sent back postcards of his adventures. There had been rumours that a new Fraggle series was in the offing, but word is finally out from Henson about the movie.
This time, it’s our heroes’ turn to explore, with the central five getting out and about and meeting humans. Author Ahmet Zappa is penning the script and will also write tunes for the film. "I'm very excited to be working with The Jim Henson Company on this project," he burbled in a statement. "So much of my childhood was spent watching Fraggle Rock... I never missed an episode! I'm also really looking forward to using music to tell the story; it played such a central role in the original series and truly helped create the Fraggle Rock that we know and love today."
Now we’re just worried they’ll be using their magical muppetry to reanimate Fulton MacKay as the captain, the man who worked at the lighthouse…
