First SSX: Deadly Descents trailer looks gritty. Also, squirrel suits!

As our favourite sociopathic Clown Prince of Crime might say, why so serious? The newly revealed SSX: Deadly Descents (the first game in the series since 2007’s Blur) all looks a bit miserable. Hell, one of us has even described it as looking like a snowboard level you might get in a COD game. Still, it least has squirrel suits. And that’s something, right?

So what do you think? Are you worried this new SSX looks like it might have lost the fun of early titles? Would you rather have the easy going ambience of the third game or would you be in favour of more serious snowboarding fare? Share your thoughts below.

I think they're going in the wrong direction. I hope they at least bring back the skis.

Wait a minute, the trailer said it got a PEGI 7 rating, the UK equivalent of an E rating. Maybe this won't be so gritty. Or maybe EA is pulling our legs to the point of dislocation.

Well, write this game off as a failure already, based on that trailer. I want my snowboarding to be fun and outrageous, not "real," "gritty," or any other buzzword used. At least it appears to be pretty big. Looks like it had 8 mountains in it. I'll stick to SSX3 over this. Hell, I'd stick with SSX1 over this.

Am I the only one that noticed "Elise" on the front of the chopper? Oh and the game looks pretty sweet, but it's a radical change from the other SSX games.

Haha this has been an amusing read. Yeah I think all the SSX fans are outraged but then again I knew SSX 3 was going to be the best in the series.

Bad gritty reboot. Gimme old SSX.

Wow, this does actually look totally uninteresting. I'll probably the last gamer you will ever hear complaining about changes made in sequels, but this seems so incredibly bland as it gets. And while competition might get serious, snowboarding, like all "extreme" sports are done for the fun and the thrill itself. Compared to this setting even a military operation is more fun than snowboarding from a hill.

Based on the scratched out mountains on the door, I'm guessing it's different groups trying to board down all those mountains first. Y'know, competition can get really serious. ... Does this mean we'll get to hit up Everest? IF so, EPIC! I will miss the days of the worldwide courses, though. I LOVED Mercury City.

PS. If you're trying to escape from terrorists/catch them there is no reason to be doing tricks off the side of a mountain, just snowboard down the effing mountain.
  • CaptainSpatula - December 13, 2010 9:46 p.m.

SSX Tricky remains one of my all time favorite games. Gritty reboots are not necessary in any way. The entire reason I play video games is to escape from how depressing and boring real life is. As video games approach realism they take away everything I like about them. It's like making a gritty reboot of Whinny the Poo; SSX is supposed to be a wacky racing game, not Call of Duty: Snowboard.

Really, really? THIS is where they're taking SSX? of all things, this is the last direction i expected. i want more radio BIG and bright environments and funny characters. how the hell do you take snowboarding so seriously. *rage quits*

I hope that SSX3 is re-released on XBLA/PSN now that Deadly Descents has been announced.

nuuuuu we need it to go back to globetrotting on surreal dream courses like in ssx: trickyyyy
  • Letter11 - December 13, 2010 8:29 p.m.

Does anyone remember Dark Summit? Let's hope they don't go that route...
  • santaclouse37 - December 13, 2010 8:16 p.m.

I hope that this was just to appease the audience at the VGAs, and this is just a sarcastic teaser. Because if it's genuinely in the spirit of the final game, something is truly wrong with the world.

Well I guess we know where Nikolai is taking Soap and Price

I'm amazed at how much more of a positive response the GR community had then everyone else who was showed this. @acridweasel I loved On Tour. Don't know why the SSX community hates it so much. Oh right, because it was different from the 3 games before it.
  • Darkhawk - December 13, 2010 7:06 p.m.

Squirrel Suits = Awesome. Storyline = lame. If the point is to be either going to or running away from terrorists, how do you justify the snow-spies doing backflips and crazy tricks on their way down the mountain? Too silly.
  • Romination - December 13, 2010 6:54 p.m.

I actually think a gritty or action-story based SSX game could wind up being even more over the top and ridiculous than all the previous ones combined. Yeah. COMBINED. Even the one where you could play as Mario. Though you know what would be better? Fighting like... supervillains who could shape the earth AS YOU SNOWBOARDED.
  • danabramovici - December 13, 2010 6:26 p.m.

very disappointed... the bright colours, crazy routes, and general ridiculousness are exactly what made SSX fun and unique. This looks so bland and reactionary... Like they tried to marry snowboarding with the grittiness of a space marine shooter. Reminds me of when every game took an eXtreme!!! sland in the 90's. I hope they rethink this direction.
