Double Fine’s new game: Costume Quest

Speaking at the Develop Conference in Brighton last month, Double Fine Productions’ Tim Shafer announced four new titles that his studio is working on. According to Schafer, these smaller projects sprouted from the cancellation of an unannounced sequel for Brutal Legend.

Today, the first of the four new titles was revealed to be Costume Quest, an adventure/RPG forXbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network scheduled to release this fall.

Development will be led by Tasha Harris, the lead animator for Brutal Legend and will be published by THQ. Costume Quest is set on Halloween night and finds you searching for your lost little sister. In a preview of the title, UGO describes Costume Quest as “familiar – like a lost SNES role-playing adventure ported in high-definition 3D – and laugh out loud funny…”

The art design in that pic looks a lot like Animal Crossing.

Despite how much I loved Brutal Legend and Pychonaughts I don't want to see a sequel for either. Double fine excels in new original ideas and even though a sequel can add more to a franchise rarely are they as innovative as the original.

I weep over the cancellation of Brutal Legend 2. I've played the original Brutal Legend twice and I've gotten 100% in the game, as well. I loved everything about it and it just breaks my heart that the amazing mythology won't continue. Tim, if you read this, please... do it for *me.* Make me a second Brutal Legend. And this might shock some, but yes. Leave in the RTS. I admit it now. I really, really liked the RTS in it.

I'm sorry to hear about the cancellation of a Brutal Legend sequel. This looks interesting and I'm sure to give it a look when it comes out.

I shed a tear at the cancellation of Brutal Legend 2. I loved everything, RTS/Action hybrid gameplay and all.

I love all of Double Fines's goods. But seriously, Psychonauts 2.

I liked Brutal Legend until the RTS gamplay came in. Then I stopped playing it and moved on to something else. I meant to go back to it, but I haven't. But, I think I'll like costume quest. Probably be nice for halloween.

I loved it as well. Tim Schafer is a great writer and has a good development team to back him up, for the most part. All they need is someone to manage the moment-to-moment quality and balancing to get it up to Jaffe/Valve levels of polish and they'd be freaking gold.

Was I the only one that really loved Brutal Legend? Even with it's sneaky RTS gameplay? I'm really bummed that there's no sequel, they could've improved from the first one and made it even more awesome.
