DICE cancels two PC Battlefield projects in favor of Battlefield 3

DICE is clearly focusing all of its energy on Battlefield 3, which is what DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson calls “the biggest launch in DICE's history.”

With such a monumental task in front of them it's no wonder that Magnus has also announced that DICE has cancelled both Battlefield 1943 for the PC and the co-op Battlefield: Bad Company 2 add-on 'Onslaught' in favor of focusing on the big title.

Battlefield 1943's continuous delays make the cancellation unsurprising - if it had launched this year, it would have done so two years after its console counterpart.

@BurntToShreds LOL! 64-player games on a console while running frostbite 2... Keep dreaming ;)
  • Pwns4you - February 7, 2011 6:15 p.m.

@BurntToShreads It can',t the xbox can only run an 18 player server and I think the ps3 is the same (but I'm not sure), that's why battlefield has always worked really well on dedicated servers.

Sadly my current PC can't run BF3. Oh well. I just hope that the console versions can have 64 player games.

Lets hope its all worth it.

Oh man can't wait for BF3 been a long time since BF2 came out...

This may be the best business decision EA has made regarding the Battlefield franchise in some time. Seriously, no offense PC players. 1943 was good but it really wasn't great. Only three maps and as many classes sort of hamper the gaming experience. As for Onslaught, you're not missing anything. Again, it's fun, but not fun enough to warrant the price asked on XBLA. I say "good." I'll be sad to give up Bad Company 2 but I can't wait for Battlefield 3.

@Defguru7777 Bad company and Bad company 2 has a story :)

Frankly I don't see the point of BF1943 on PC, it makes sense on consoles since they don't have 1942, but PC does. Also Onslaught Mode is fun, but it isn't too terribly important, so BF3 getting more love is a much better use of resources.

Bf3 with Titan killing (and throwing motion mines on top of the forcefield above the air vehicles)... or is that just silly?
  • batmanboy11 - February 5, 2011 3:28 a.m.

    I'd rather have BF3 anyway.

As an outside observer (someone who's never played Battlefield), this seems like a smart move on DICE's part. I assume Battlefield doesn't really have much of a story (sorry if I'm mistaken), so putting the can on two side projects so that the main course is even better seems like a smart move.

I'm fine with that. One is an overpriced expansion that didn't live up to most people's expectations and the other is already available on PC with extras features and maps (but worse graphics). I'm much more excited for BF3 and I'm happy to see more effort being put into it. Now I'm interested in the next Game Informer (BF3 is the cover story).

Somewhat upsetting, since I wanted 1943 so much, but hey, if it makes Battlefield 3 better, by all means.
  • SecretGingerWizard - February 5, 2011 1:41 a.m.

I'm super glad Dice is focusing on BF3 so much..... but I kind of wish they hadn't canceled content for Bad Company 2.

Really glad no spammers/1sters got to the top of the comments list.

NOOOOOOO! i mean yes! BF3 :D!! but NOOOOO I kinda sorta maybe really wanted a 1943 on mah PC... :(
  • nadrewod - February 5, 2011 1:35 a.m.

I am glad they canceled the two PC projects. Don't start a flame war because of that sentence, all you PC fanboys. I am just saying that this will free up more of DICE's resources for Battlefield 3, which in and by itself will guarantee that the final project will have much better quality, which IMHO is much better than quantity (looking you dead in the eye, Kotick. Stop it now. You should follow Schafer's example of making only a few extremely high quality games, like Brutal Legend, even while fighting off your evil lawsuits.)
  • BigWillis - February 5, 2011 1:35 a.m.

Oh well. It's not like it's needed on PC really anyway, you get more from BF:1942 anyway. It works great on console, on PC it might be a bit out of place.
