Blizzard claims WoW: Cataclysm to be the fastest selling PC game of all time

Blizzard has declared World of Warcraft: Cataclysm to be the fastest selling PC game of all time. According to the company's internal data, the newly released expansion for its monolithic MMO sold 3.2 million copies within the first 24 hours of its release on December 7th. This achievement dwarfs the former record of 2.8 million copies set by Blizzard's previous World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, released in November 2008.

"We had to bring Azeroth to the brink of destruction in Cataclysm, but the result was our best expansion yet," said Blizzard's CEO Mike Morhaime in the company's official announcement.

"We want to thank all of our new, existing, and returning players throughout the world for their incredible enthusiasm and support, and we look forward to hearing what they think about all the new content."

Cataclysm's launch was a global affair, with over 10,000 stores across the world participating in midnight launches and over 15,000 players taking part in launch parties across North America, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and Russia, Sweden, Spain, France and the region of Taiwan.

In an addendum to today's news release, Blizzard also issued a call for future employees needed to, “keep pace with the continued growth of World of Warcraft," as well as work on future Blizzard Entertainment titles. Requirements may or may not include washing Morhaime's car on an hourly basis, but there are worse ways of breaking to the industry.

Ummm.....I thought it was an "EXPANSION PACK"!? When did it become a full fledge game?

So, they have a new best selling game of all time to top their last fasting selling PC game of all time.

I hate the stat "fastest selling game ever". At least make a sort of explanation what your criteria is. Is it the fastest a game ever sold it's first copy after midnight someplace in the world? Is it the game that was the fastest to scan over a barcode reader and check out of the register of the store? Is it the game that gets to 2 million units sold the quickest? Couldn't the award go to Revolution Sports, since it got to 60million faster than anyone else, since no other game has reached that high? Blizzard, if you are going to claim that it's the "best selling game in it's first 24 hours" as this article is talking about, then say it.

There are elements of Cataclysm, like the reshaped world, that will be visible to anyone with the base game of WoW, but that doesn't mean much if you didn't see it before it was reshaped. If you want the meaningful content, you need both WoW and Cataclysm - although if you're a new player, a lot of Cataclysm will be irrelevant to you since it's focused on high level stuff. You'd only really want it if you are dying to play as a Goblin or Worgen (werewolf).

I feel really stupid asking this but can I just by Cataclysm and jump right into World of Warcraft who would I have to own and have played the original?

@kickedbylizzie etc.: totally. unless you had some problems with guildies before you left, you should be welcomed back with open arms!

Yeah, it was fun and new and crap, but sadly, I'm already starting to get sick of it.
