Apocalypse Now review

Francis Ford Coppola went into the jungle to make his surreal ’Nam epic and almost lost his mind during one of the most protracted and accident-prone shoots in history.

Thankfully the hallucinogenic results justified the means, Martin Sheen’s mission to terminate Marlon Brando’s crazy Colonel Kurtz becoming an awe-inspiring journey into war’s primeval heart of darkness.

Robert Duvall appears along the way to spout quotable dialogue, while Dennis Hopper is mesmerising as a snapper turned groupie.

This is the original cut rather than the 2001 ‘Redux’ (be gone, jarring French plantation interlude!), digitally restored to such heights you can, indeed, get a nose full of the napalm
