Ya’ll know who he is! Oh… most of you don’t actually, do you?
This here’s the Black “Muthafucking” Baron (Stop Starin’!) and he’s from MadWorld, an incredibly unique game almost everyone overlooked due solely to being on Wii. Much more notably, MadWorld very well might be the most unrelentingly crass game of all time! Hey, we never thought we’d be able to bring him up again, then BOOM: Platinum Games puts another MadWorld character in Anarchy Reigns, and hoo boy, he’s a doozy.
I did a fairly massive write up on game thing for last year’s Unfunniest Games of March feature highlighting the desperate depths of gaming’s comedic failures, but in the time since… I’m no longer sure whether the game’s is irritatingly filthy or an unbelievably clever and self-aware parody of this medium’s poor perception of audience maturity. (Honestly, has any other game found an excuse to have their announcer scream “Hobo Choad!” for no reason?!)
However, what I do know, with almost 100% certainty, is that The Black Baron, MadWorld’s pimpalicious carnival barker is probably the most racially insensitive character I’ve ever seen this generation, IMO. (In case you were wondering, I’m Italian, therefore the blackest member on GamesRadar’s staff and thus entitled to weigh in on all African-American issues!) He's like the polygonal Al Jolson, but we've had a dickload of fun with this voice clips on our filthy, stupid podcast.
While Anarchy Reigns appears to be using a different voice actor in the video up top, The Black Baron was originally voiced by Reno Wilson, the very same man who brought to life half of the jive-talkin’ robot duo from the last Transformers movie, which was also derided as extremely ethnically offensive. Coincidentally, Wilson also voices Sazh from Final Fantasy XIII, one of most respectable characters, black or otherwise, of this generation? So don’t blame the dude – he’s just making a living. In a quite versatile way, I might add!
