Anarchy Reigns confirms The Black 'Muthaf**in' Baron (stop starin')

Ya’ll know who he is! Oh… most of you don’t actually, do you?

This here’s the Black “Muthafucking” Baron (Stop Starin’!) and he’s from MadWorld, an incredibly unique game almost everyone overlooked due solely to being on Wii. Much more notably, MadWorld very well might be the most unrelentingly crass game of all time! Hey, we never thought we’d be able to bring him up again, then BOOM: Platinum Games puts another MadWorld character in Anarchy Reigns, and hoo boy, he’s a doozy.

I did a fairly massive write up on game thing for last year’s Unfunniest Games of March feature highlighting the desperate depths of gaming’s comedic failures, but in the time since… I’m no longer sure whether the game’s is irritatingly filthy or an unbelievably clever and self-aware parody of this medium’s poor perception of audience maturity. (Honestly, has any other game found an excuse to have their announcer scream “Hobo Choad!” for no reason?!)

However, what I do know, with almost 100% certainty, is that The Black Baron, MadWorld’s pimpalicious carnival barker is probably the most racially insensitive character I’ve ever seen this generation, IMO. (In case you were wondering, I’m Italian, therefore the blackest member on GamesRadar’s staff and thus entitled to weigh in on all African-American issues!) He's like the polygonal Al Jolson, but we've had a dickload of fun with this voice clips on our filthy, stupid podcast.

While Anarchy Reigns appears to be using a different voice actor in the video up top, The Black Baron was originally voiced by Reno Wilson, the very same man who brought to life half of the jive-talkin’ robot duo from the last Transformers movie, which was also derided as extremely ethnically offensive. Coincidentally, Wilson also voices Sazh from Final Fantasy XIII, one of most respectable characters, black or otherwise, of this generation? So don’t blame the dude – he’s just making a living. In a quite versatile way, I might add!

as a native american/mexican it was a bit awkward shooting the native guys that show up towards the end of red dead redemption, but i do understand that its meant purely for gaming purposes. I do find it odd that almost every latino character in games has to sound like the taco bell dog or every asian guy has to sound like david lo pan from Big Trouble in Little China..Race in Games article GR?

Why does he no longer sound like he smokes 40 a day?
  • KidKatana - March 18, 2011 9:07 a.m.

Not sold on that voice actor, the old one was better...he sounded a bit like the Spirit of Jazz. Mi dispiace Chris, ho creduto che Antista sia stato un nome spagnolo - hai gia superato Mario per il titolo di 'italiano piu importante nel mondo di videogiochi'.

Am I the only one one who loves this guy?
  • Triscuitable - March 18, 2011 2:58 a.m.

And the Black Baron may not be black. Of course, through the commentary that lets you know this, you also learn Kreese may actually be black. (I had to turn down the screams of my enemies to hear that.)

DE-FENSE BEATTHROUGH! DE-FENSE BEATTHROUGH! S-to-the-U-to-the-R-to-the-V-to-the-I-to-the-V-to-the-A-to-the-L! (Anyone else pre-order for the awesome soundtrack? No? Too bad, y' missed out on the best soundtrack I've ever heard. Maybe save No More Heroes.) THIS AND JACK MAKES ME SO HAPPY!
  • CancerMan - March 18, 2011 2:55 a.m.

Now I have to buy this.
  • Robusken - March 17, 2011 11:39 p.m.

Black Baron? Now i'm interested. I've never actually seen the game in motion till today but it does look pretty cool .
  • Openwound - March 17, 2011 10:32 p.m.

If you notice, I believe this character is the "Blacker Baron" a possibly all-new character.

    @renkun67 Hell yeah!

I bet those gloves can give one mighty backhand...

    So this isn't a joke...?
  • Cleanser247 - March 17, 2011 9:49 p.m.

"Awww hell no" reminds me of a TalkRadar sound effect! Damn, that was funny! Great news feature Chris : )
  • LordPwnge18 - March 17, 2011 9:39 p.m.

Ahhh this may have just sold the game for me. But I'm still iffy on the new voice actor, it really does not fit the Black Baron. Ah well, I guess there's always Jack if i can't stand the new voice actor.
  • TastyCakesMcgee - March 17, 2011 9:33 p.m.

Other voice was better, just saying.
  • Letter11 - March 17, 2011 9:20 p.m.

As a black guy, I find the Baron kind of ridiculous, but it's all in the sake of fun so I don't really care. I mean how many black comedians have racially charged jokes? Essentially all of them. I like how you pointed out the the same guy voices Sazh from FFXIII who is an awesome character. Sure it's his job and he's trying to get paid but underneath that he probably realizes it for an attempt at humor. Since the GR Classic article went up I was thinking about CJ from San Andreas. Although that game is awesome, I think that kind of portrayal of black man is a bit more controversial than this.

"an unbelievably clever and self-aware parody of this medium’s poor perception of audience maturity" Bingo. All Platinum Games are this.

More excited about Mathilda being in it.. Also, only just heard of this game.. lol, thanks Gamesradar :D I would have been in the dark otherwise! Loved Madworld!
