Halo 4 Limited Edition - $99.99 gets you 3 map packs on day one, other digital extras

Microsoft has unveiled a $99.99 Halo 4 Limited Edition, and it’s now available for pre-order. Some may prefer the shiny metal box to Halo 4's box art, plus it’s chocked full of bonus in-game items, an extended version of the Halo web series, and multiplayer maps other players will have to buy separately later on down the line. Here are the full details from Microsoft:

Limited Edition Contents
-        War Games Map Packs: The Limited Edition includes access to nine maps - three future competitive multiplayer map packs, each including three locations, available for download post-launch on Xbox LIVE.
-        Specializations: Receive early access to six Specializations, available at launch on Xbox LIVE, and use them, one at a time, to achieve higher ranks in your Spartan career. In addition to gaining access to new ranks, Specializations unlock new customization options.

-        The Special Edition of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, a 90-minute extended version of the live-action digital series which will take fans back to the terrifying beginning of the Human/Covenant war, when the Master Chief inspired a young cadet who would eventually become a leader aboard the UNSC’s greatest vessel ever: the UNSC Infinity.
Digital Content also included:
o   Bonus in-fiction bonus content expanding the characters and stories of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn
o   Special Featurette: Bringing Gaming into Reality
o   Making of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn

-        Bonus digital content through Xbox LIVE:
·        Unique in-game Spartan IV armor skin
·        Unique in-game weapon skin for the Assault Rifle
·        An exclusive in-game emblem
·        Xbox LIVE Avatar prop
·        Xbox LIVE Avatar Spartan IV armor set

That’s a lot of stuff! Halo 4's release date is still firm for November 6. Is all this digital content enough to warrant the hundred dollar price tag? Will you be pre-ordering?

Not really "hyped" for this limited edition. I was expecting something bigger lol (ie Borderlands 2 SE) I still look through the stuff I got in my Halo Reach CE Maybe a statue or doll lol. The specializations sound like a 1 time use power bonus (credit boost kind) I think they should only be available to the Pre-order ppl and never released later in the game. You snooze You lose.

GR, do you have any more info? If the map packs are a season pass type deal, that's brilliant, and someone at MSGS is reading my e-mails. The one that worries me is the 'specializations'/customizations. Are we paying for power? Early access only? If the former, that's not cool...if the latter, I'm fine with it so long as it gives us options, rather than a power bump.

Looks fantastic! I'm definetly gonna get that since it's so close to my birthday. I ALWAYS try and get whatever Limited or Collectors Edition available.

Is it just me or does all this new halo 4 stuff look a little bit square enix-y? definitely a different tone than bungie had but still looks great

This sounds tempting. I certainly would want to get the map packs when they come out and each one is $10 (plus tax, I believe). Add that up with the $60 and you have $90 with a total of $4.95 tax with my state's tax rate. That means that for an extra $5, I get a whole bunch of other stuff. I've never bought a limited edition before, but I may just have to do it now. PS: Fail to all the people who really think there will be 3 separate map packs on the same day Halo 4 launches, btw. As previously stated, this is basically a season pass.

You don't get the map packs early. You just get a key to download them when they come out.

    Misleading title is misleading.

Is all this digital content enough to warrant the hundred dollar price tag? Will you be pre-ordering? Question 1: Hopefully. It sure looks that way. The map packs will probably be $10 each for those who don't get this, so that's $90 value off the bat. Plus all that other stuff for what amounts to $10? Hell yeah. Oh, and a Steelbook case. Those are always awesome. Question 2: As soon as it appears on Amazon.

    Another in-fiction journal/pamphlet to read? I'm down.
  • ZuzuPachulia - May 16, 2012 12:27 p.m.

Announcements like this just make me wish for the older days of gaming where the ENTIRE game came on the disc/cartridge. But I must say, I'm still looking forward to halo 4.
  • ObliqueZombie - May 16, 2012 12:46 p.m.

Then you've been craving the old days for a long, long time.
  • tomthespesh - May 16, 2012 11:33 a.m.

Well I bought the Limited editions for Halo 3, Wars and Reach so may as well get another. Plus that is a healthy amount of stuff with it.
  • spideralex90 - May 16, 2012 11:29 a.m.

I was going to say I'm buying this to save money, but if you include taxes and the likelihood that the map packs will be $15 a piece, this is almost the exact same price as buying the game and getting the maps as they come out. This does however give you all the extra goodies. So maybe.
  • ObliqueZombie - May 16, 2012 12:45 p.m.

Halo always made them $10, but the fact still remains it's be cheaper to go with this one. I mean, it's be roughly $95 without buying this and just the game and map packs, but that's not to mention to other awesome goodies that come with it.
  • ShadowReaper666 - May 16, 2012 11:04 a.m.

Really 3 map packs? That just f***ing ridiculous! Well I know what game I'm not getting this year.
  • bboyd - May 16, 2012 11:22 a.m.

It's not as bad as you think, if you actually read the article. What Halo game DOESN'T have a multitude of map packs? They are not getting these map at launch, they are basically paying up front (and less), so that they can download the maps when they are released much later down the line.
  • Defguru7777 - May 16, 2012 12:12 p.m.

It's essentially a season pass. Sounds good to me.
