Though our favourite film characters are immortalised on screen, the same doesn't hold true for the actors who portray them. Just as Daniel Craig will not always be James Bond, a new actor may one day don Indiana Jones' infamous fedora... or will he?
Steven Spielberg has been doing interviews in the press to promote his latest movie Bridge of Spies, and it was during one such tête-à-tête with Screen Daily that he had this to say on whether or not Indy would eventually have to be recast: "I don’t think anyone could replace Harrison as Indy, I don’t think that’s ever going to happen. It’s certainly not my intention to ever have another actor step into his shoes in the way there have been many actors that have played Spider-Man or Batman. There is only going to be one actor playing Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford".
There has been plenty of rumblings about a new Indy movie of late, with Ford recently stating he'd love to play the hero again. However, it is inevitable that the day will come when that's no longer possible, which will leave Disney and Spielberg facing the difficult decision of whether to retire the character completely or recast. Judging by these comments, it would seem that the former is more likely.
Directed by Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies is out in UK and US cinemas now.
