You might still be trying to erase the memory of the last Lara Croft movie from your memory- yes, that was Gerard Butler alongside Angelina Jolie in The Cradle Of Life - but there's another Tomb Raider flick on the way. Before you start booking therapy though, things are looking a bit different this time around.
Firstly, Norwegian director Roar Uthaug is nothing like Con Air and Expendables 2 director Simon West who was previously in charge of Lara's silver screen outings. Uthaug directed one of my favourite movies from FrightFest last weekend, mega disaster-piece The Wave. It was a tremendous balance of catastrophe and character which is exactly the tone we need for Tomb Raider. Plus, it was Norway's submission for the Best Foreign Language Oscar this year. You can read my review here (opens in new tab).
Secondly, Uthaug is looking to the latest games for inspiration for the reboot and origins story. "I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that's definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well," he told IGN (opens in new tab). "I think we'll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I'm hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise."
These Norwegian sensibilities also happily include being a big fan of Indiana Jones. "Raiders of the Lost Ark was one of my favourite films growing up, so it's definitely a dream to work in that kind of genre," he continued. "I think we'll want to make it feel like a modern action movie and to make what's going on feel like it's going on for real." Given the nice balance of that in The Wave, I think we're in safe hands. We're still awaiting news on the casting of Lara herself but we'll keep you updated.
